I'm getting ready to register my 83 J-10 in Texas that doesn't require a smog check. What are the advantages/disadvantages to going with a 4bbl intake with egr, versus a non-egr system?
Anybody with the Edelbrock Performer intake had any problems with mounting accessories (A/C, etc...), or problems with the trans kickdown, or throttle cable?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated

billy-
You will find that you gain better low end and high end torque for sure. Also as far as mounting the problems I has were as follows:
-Ac bracket holes were not machined correct. Had to drill out the ac bracket.
-egr holes were not drilled correctly. Had to drill out holes on egr also.
Other than that it is great. And much better emission testing.
Do it you will love it. Where in Tx are you now.

Hey another thing...I am sure I will come up with more as I think.
Accelerator bracket. I used one of those chrome jobs from summit or you can even get them from an auto parts store. No problem hooking it up.
Could not hook up my cruise control..
Kickdown cable took some playing with. Make sure your spring on the cable arm matches the spring on the accelerator cable or they will not work together. They will work against each other.
Had to go to a 1" spacer because of vapor lock. I used a standard Aluminum spacer from Mr. Gasket. Seemed to solve the problem on Texas hot starts.
Anymore I think of I will post. ;)

I'm currently in the military, but my home state of residence is Texas. I was born in Oklahoma, but my parents moved to Mission Tx, so I changed my home state of record.
Which carburetor are you running? Any other mods? I was thinking of going with the EGR system, running a edelbrock performer 600 cfm carb and performer intake and cam. I wanted to stick with single exhaust, still retain the cat, and go with a 3" exhaust system. I don't want to completely get rid of all the emission equipment, as to get a DOD access sticker on my vehicle, I do have to pass a minimum 'government' emission check (they don't do a visual check at all).
I also plan to do the TFI upgrade as well. I love the truck but hate the double negative of low gas mileage AND low power.

I run a stock Motorcraft 4350 on a stock four barrel manifold with a stock distributor. EGR is disconnected. Throttle response is noticably better without EGR. Not dramatic, but not minor either. You can feel the difference.

Billy-
It is the 1406 electric choke and the EGR Manifold. I am running all my emissions also and will pass with flying colors. I agree. I did not like the double whammy. Low power and low gas mileage. I am getting about 10mpg in city and 14-16 on the highway, and i have plenty of power with the carb and the tfi upgrade the diffrence is unbelievable. Do it. It is worth every penny. If you are looking for some power this will do it for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I'll let you know how it works out. It will probably be after the holidays before I'm able to even find the time to wrench on it....maybe Santa will leave me a carb/intake/cam kit under the tree....8^)

oh and another thing...hahaha. Have you ever had any trouble with your edelbrock whenever you are on unlevel ground? My buddy has one on his CJ-5 and claims it sputters every time he goes up or down steep hills, and whenever he is angled over towards the side. He claims that Holley's are better for off road. Any thoughts on this?

billyj7175, where in SoCal are you stationed.. check with the base your at about there smog requiremnts..I just transferred from Lemoore, CA and they required a smog check even if you are running out of state plates.. it's my understanding that all bases in CA with the exception of El Centro (thats where I'm at.. :D ) are requiring this smog check.. good luck.

billy,
You're friends right, the 1406 will do terrible on off camber situations, especially when compared to the 2150. But holley's are really not that much better. You can get an off road spring and seat set from edelbrock for cheap that is very easy to install, and then you'll be doing as good as the 2150 smile.gif

Hey Billy...
Forgot that part. Brown Bear is correct. Nasty on steep grades. Spit sputter and sputter somemore and then shut down then roll down that hill backwards.
Edelbrock makes a kit that will fix the problem. What happens the float gets into a bad angle closing off the needle and fuel flow. I will be doing that to mine soon. The kit is not expensive. That keeps the float from I guess you sould say raising and closing the needle. Good question. I forgot about that. I found that out about two weeks ago.

I'm stationed at Edwards AFB. The check they do for the base sticker is only a sniff test. I managed to barely pass but only with the vacuum advance disconnected. Since I already have the sticker, I won't need to smog it again, unless of course I get stationed at a different base in California. The main reason I'm changing my registration to Texas (besides omitting the smog requirement), is that I'm tired of paying the socialist republic of california they're stinking "weight fee" on my pickup. I love the desert out here, as it provides for ample space to offroad, but I hate all of the little quirky laws and regulations that this state has. Hopefully, if fate serves me well, I will be stationed elsewhere sometime in the near future...hahaha. Anyway, back on a better subject (FSJ), Thanks again for all the information.

...oh and another thing. In your opinion, would replacing my stock cam, with a edelbrock performer cam, push me over the smog limits?...I'm pretty sure I can get away with the 4bbl if I get the EGR compatible system, but I don't know about the cam. I have a lifter that refuses to stop tapping, so I will be putting a set of lifters in anyway.
Any problems with detonation (pinging) with the 4bbl setup? Mine pings like crazy under a heavy load, even with the timing backed off, and super unleaded.
