My buddy has a '74 J-10, and tells me I have to jack up the Wag at the frame or motor to get the starter out. Is this true for a '76??

Well Jack it up so as you can get under the Wag. Thats the only reason. Do NOT jack on the motor. 2 bolts 9/16" socket, and one wire to undo.

dropped mine out in less then 2 minutes ! 2 bolts and 1 wire, it doesn't get any easier. Unless you got a low rider...

Are his motor mounts broke?

It was a piece of cake in my 75. It is easier to get out than to put back in though. 5-10 minutes out and 10-15 to put it back in. No jack was needed, but I am lifted fairly high up and that makes it easier.

Well, my buddy was right. I had to jack up the frame just behind the front right spring to get the darn starter out of it's spot. The combination of the differential, oil-pan, and tranny cooler lines would not allow it out any other way. But it was very easy!
