As if the leaky gas wasn't enough, while under there I found the rusted floor pans where worst then I thought.....
Luckily I found a welder who will replace both sides for $150 each (from the edge to the first brace along the entire length)..not a bad price. However I need to do the grunt work, ie remove the interior (seats, belts and rugs)
How difficult is this?? I see the seats have four bolts, no problem....the belts have a funny star shaped bolt, trouble......and the carpet seems to be held down by trim pieces......
Is the carpet glued down anywhere??? Once up could it be easily put back??? How do I get the Seat belts off??????
I am sure life was easier with the horse and buggy, but not as much fun!!!!!!!

Well.... the seat belt bolt is a TORX bolt six point or star as some call it. Your local tool shop will have a socket type apex for it for around $5-$7. carpet is not glued in per say but will be stuck to the padding/insulation (or whats's left of it) underneath from years of wet feet and mud/humidity and the like. shouldn't be too hard to gut it. Good luck
oh... think of changin' a wheel bearing on a buggy in those days (hehe) http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif... if they had any and what would they be made of???

Bigbry,
Removing the interior is more time consuming than hard.
Put the seats in the highest position before you take the ratchet to them. 4 bolts, I think. Then you can get the armrest. My carpet wasn't glued or anything, just melted in place by a hole in the muffler. Hopefully you don't have that problem.
Get some Torx head drivers for the seatbelts.
The trim pieces were kind of a pain in some places, the screws have sealant\glue on them that catch the carpet when unscrewing and wad it up in a knot around the screw.
Have fun!

Be prepared for some difficulty removing those seat belt torx. Penetrant didn't help. I twisted the tool trying to remove a seat belt so that I could go after a ground wire problem under the carpet that has caused my interior lights to go out. I am considering using acetylene on the weld nut from below but don't want to set the interior on fire. Maybe an impact would work. Anyone else have success removing these torx?

On this topic...
I'm trying to clear out the cowl vents which are jam-packed with leaves and pine needles. Is there any way to do this that doesn't require removing the a/c system? I have a tentative appointment with a shop to totally evac my system--it doesn't work anyway, so I figured I'd pull it until I can fix it and then reinstall. However, the screws that hold the vent faces on are a true bear to get to with a screwdriver. Anybody have any suggestions? I want to fix the problem before I fix the symptom (rusted-out floorboards).
Other issue: I ordered carpet from Atrim yesterday...custom-made loop carpeting instead of the regular cut-pile. I'll send pix if I can steal my girlfriend's digicam, because this is some good-looking stuff!

On mine, I did have to remove the AC to get to those fresh air vents. I tried to scoop the debris out first but it didn't work. If you have a shop vac that may work, though. If not: be prepared to re-seal the vents (there is a write-up in tech under 'leak diagnosis' or something). While you're at it, might as well pull the heater box and clean it out, too; then pull the glovebox and get the defrost vents. There are 2 fasteners for the heater box behind the AC also. As for removing the AC ducting, that was the easiest part of the job for me.

Langdon, did you have to de-charge your a/c system? The ductwork on the driver's side is no biggy...what I'm talking about is the passenger side, with the fan and some other stuff crammed into a big black plastic box. I have to replace the evaporator coil anyway (assuming I find one that's reasonable) so I figured I might as well pull the whole shebang. I tried to vac the vents out at the local carwash, but the vacuum hose wouldn't fit down the cowl and I couldn't get the rigid end off it to shove the hose in there.

I think the Torx head is a #50. After removing any carpet that might give me trouble (burn) I used a simple portable propane torch to heat the nut(s) and the bolts came out pretty easy. I had no trouble with any of the seat or console bolts at all. Different story with the rear seatbelt bolts. Despite repeatedly heating them (3) of the bolts will not budge. NAPA has replaced (2) of the Torx bits but I think there getting suspicious.
