View Full Version : Heat won't turn off....

The heat in my 83 limited is still coming in after I shut it (the heat) off.....I,ve had it apart and everything seems to be working....There is heat at the heater but has little to push it, the fan seems to be off but there is hot air still flowing through the heater, maybe fresh air from the outside????

Help..........This seems impossible but, I have to keep the air conditioning on to balance off the heat on any day above 50 degrees...

The heater core allways has hot water flowing though it, the heat on off
lever just changes the possition of the blend door, The cable that moves the
door goes from the lever though tha fire wall and hooks to the little lever arm
sticking out of the top of the heater core housing, see if it is still hooked up and
operational, if not you could always push the lever to one side (I don't remember which
side is off, try both ways) and tape it down untill winter then reverse in spring.

Its almost winter, so you'll need the heat ;)

There should be a vacum controlled flap on the pass side of the fire wall inbetween the outside heater box and the inside. Maybe its stuck open, allowing the air moving through the vehicle while in motion to blow warm air in. You won't be able to see the flap since its inside the duct work, but you should be able to find the vaccum motor thingy inside to, make sure it is hooked up correctly. You should also be able to move the lever that is attached to it to see if the flap moves. Also make sure that the cable that runs from the heater control to the heater box in the engine compartment is hooked up correctly. Mine is broken so I have to use zip-ties to hold the lever on the top of the heater box in one position for the winter (heat) and the other for summer (no heat).

I hope that makes some sense to you... if not someone else will probably be able to explain it better than me ;) :D

I added a vacuum-controlled bypass valve from an '84 XJ to keep the coolant from flowing through my heater-core in the summer, since I'd still feel heated air trickling out the floor-vents, which could actually be a noticeable flow at highway speeds.

Of course, if your flapper is broken or not connected, or if the seals are dry-rotted, you'll get the full heating effect.

I think they have cable controlled coolant by-passes like that also. Can't remember what I've seen them on though...

Thanks for the feedback, I'll recheck everything you all sugested. If all else fails I try a bypass valve, I never knew they exzisted...
