Hello,
My truck has been making this annoying gnnnnnnnnnn noise when the tranny is under load, as it goes away when I decelerate. I noticed that the rear pumpking gets a little warm, and that there is some wear (not too much) on the gears. I dropped the rear driveshaft, drove the truck in 4WD, and the noise went away. I can feel the vibration from the tranny shifter (T-18). Would a bad wheel bearing cause this symptoms?
Thanks

Hey, I have the same noise, cept if come from the front of my truck. I've been told here that it is the pinion bearing. I havent found the exact way to diagnose it nor have I found out how hard of a job it is to fix. I think the ring and pinion must be removed. I also don't know the consequences of driving in such a state, but it can't be good long term. Anybody got any wisdom?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hey Daniel,
What makes me lean towards the rear axle, vs the tranny/TC is the fact that when I changed the gear oil in the rear pumpkin, the diff didn't turn as freely as I think it should. I'm going to put my jeep on jackstands and have a friend go through the gears, see if I can ID the noise from the outside (safely, of course). If it's a problem in the rear axle, I don't understand how the vibration gets transmitted to the tranny. Good luck to you....

Others know better than I but it sounds maybe like a bad pinion bearing. I have talked with Randy's in the past about rear ends and they have been very helpful.

I got it too...

I figure that in my case it's the rear R&P (lots 'o slopt), I didn't see a lot of play in the pinion bearing.

Since there are no specialize drivetrain shops near me, I plan on driving it till it grenades, then learing how to rebuild an axle :D :D .

What happens when a diff. lets go at speed??

Thank you guys. Langdon, if the pinion surfaces look OK, but there is some visible wear and play, could that be the cause of the noise? Thanks.

Well, when a diff lets go at speed, a couple things can happen. It can 1: lock up on you, causing a terrible loss of control, or 2: It will blow a few spider gear teeth and maybe a couple of ring and pinion gear teeth, and it will just pop and bang when the wheels are turning. The second is what happened to by brother's Chero, and my dad's Dodge 3/4 ton.
Not saying either one is a good thing to encounter, though. smile.gif

I had a Dana 60 go on me. Felt like I lost the tranny or a driveshaft. Step on the gas and nothing. Locked in the hubs and drove home on the front.

Back To the Top... He wants someone to read his problem and give him some fix actions... Focus on the topic, etc.

Take it apart and look at it... Take pictures and post them...

Could you put it on a body lift/stands and start up? Would the noise occur with the wheels spinning with no resistance? Perhaps you could walk around the truck and listen? Or would that be a bad idea?

Let me start by saying that I have little axle experience...
Mikel, that is what I have concluded by dropping shafts and driving in E-drive. I have replaced all u-joints and the tranny and engine mounts, but was still getting the 'thud' going into gear...That goes away when the rear shaft is off. I have much play in the rear diff. I don't really know, tho; one would think that the R&P teeth would wear evenly and maintain proper mesh. Like I said, I'm no axle expert...just waiting for something to break

Thank you guys.
Yes, BTT is Back To the Top :D
Langdon, one thing I've noticed is that when gears wear, play increases. When I had a TH400/QT in my truck, every time I went into reverse it would make a loud Klunk, as the slop in the drivetrain goes away. As far as I know, most high mileage vehicles will make that noise, and I believe it's nothing to worry about. Good luck!

If the gears are worn uneavenly then they will whine a lot. I have a set in my race car 5:13's. They whine all the way down the track. When the gears let go, just hold on. I would suspect that it is the rear bearing. I would and it is safe with some one ton jack stands. Put the rig on the jack stands and start the vehicle. Put it in low gear <1> and let them spin. Go to the rear end with a vaccum hose to the ear and listen. Sometimes you will only hear the rear gears under load though.

The effect from driving with a bad bearing it could wear into the pinion. Meaning you could have to replace the ring and pinion.
