View Full Version : 33's on a Wagoneer-Need Info...
Ok, Heres the deal...
I had a tire (stock p235) go out yesterday on the freeway and the Wife agreed that it is time to upgrade to a more "off-road" worthy tire.
I installed AAL's last year that got me a little over 2.5" and I know 31x10.5's on a stock wheel will fit just fine with no rubbing and without lift.
I have ordered (but not paid or commited to) BFG 33x10.5's and my initial measuring told me that I would need to trim the front fenders a little over an inch to accomidate the extra height, which I have no problem with because they were already tweaked when I bought it. On the rears it looks like I "MAY" need to trim the front and rear edges of the fender only where they tuck under the vehicle
I would prefer not to trim the rears which is why I am staying away from the 12.5" wide tires. The 31x10.5's stuff with no rub so in theory the extra inch in height (radius) should not be a problem.
Also I have read RB's "What Fits" post in the archives, and other than Bob Barry's NT it doesnt seem that anybody else has tried making these fit. I am planning a SOA and 1" body lift in the near future which is why I want to go with the 33's now. I dont want to buy tires twice.
What I need to know is this...
For those of you running 31x10.5's, how close are the front and back edges of the fender to the tire an their closest (when compressed).
And for those of you running 33x12.5's, how much did you trim from the front and/or back edges of your fenders.
The tires will be in on Monday so if I need to cut the rear's I want to take care of it this weekend.
Thanks in advance...
kris.

hey
running 33x12.50's here
i didnt trim anything, but i have about 7" of lift
however, the tires did fit after a 4" suspension lift, just im sure they would rub offroad.
Im sure this didnt help much

33x12.50s here and I have 4" susp. lift and 3" body lift. I was told I only needed 6" lift to fit the 33s. The SOA should give you about 4" so you'll only be about 1" shy for 12.50s unless you go with a 2" body lift.
If you go with the 10.50s you might be fine. If you're set on 33s then get the 33s. You'll make it work one way or another especially if you aren't afraid to trim some sheet metal.

33x1250's also 4" susp and 3" body lift minor rubbage in frt under full flex, none in rear with fender trimming on dogleg
Thanks guys...
jeepbob, by "triming on the dogleg" do you mean the body where it rolls under the rocker panel ?
That is where I feel that any triming would take place if at all.
As far as the body lifts go, I'm trying to stay away from more than 1" and wont do it until the SOA is done later this year.
I had a guy in my club that runs these tires do some measuring today and it looks like the rears will not need triming, although the wheel wells will be STUFFED. The fronts are getting 1" to 1.5" taken off tomorrow.
I'll keep you posted...

I have 33x10.50's on my Cherokee. I have just a 4" lift and it works excellent. My 33's are mounted on the stock 7" rims. The bottom corners of my rear wheel wells are rust out a bit which allowed me to do some bending.
I was able to drive the vehicle without the lift installed (of course this isn't very cool though).
If you're planning on doing a SOA conversion I would (personally) get bigger tires than 33's. I just have this thought that the higher you lift your vehicle the smaller the tire looks (plus, bigger and wider does add some more stability).
I've got some pictures you can look at. Just click the link in my sig, or: here (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/mtntrip).
The one picture of it sitting inside shows it with the 33's on without any lift.

Does this mean that clearance was required in the rear wheel wells?

Did you do this without triming the fronts?
From what I can tell the top edge will need triming to clear the tire when turning and compressed.

I thought about that for a while and feel that 35x12.5's are better with a SOA, and may go that route. If that be the case then the 33's will go on my yj. 7" rims are a little narrow for the 33x12.5's and I dont want to purchase new wheels now.

Wouls love to see a better picture, or better resolution on that one, can you mail it?
Thanks...

I have 33x12.5 on my '79 with a 3" lift. The rear was trimmed by the po. I will be installing a 3" body lift soon.

Hey... What about running 33x10.50 on a 4" lift? You have to trim with the 33x12.50 because they poke out of the fenders, right? But they stay in the wheel wells enough with 10.50? I might have to try 33x10.50, if that's the case. I really don't want to trim, or lift much more.

Yes, thats the whole idea...
31x10.5's fit stock with no triming. I have 2.5" of lift, but on stock bump stops. My only concern was any triming needed in the rear, but it looks like I can get away with only a few "love" taps with a hammer.
The 33x10.5's only move the tread 1" closer to the fender lips, and this only looks to be a problem on the bottom edges on the fenders where they tuck under. I am considering not triming the front until after I get the tires just to see if they will clear.
If your 4" lift is still on the stock bumpstops, then if it works on mine, it will work on yours.
If you dont mind loosing an inch or two of travel up front, extended bumpstops would be the answer
I will keep you posted.

Kris,
There are better pictures on my site, you just need to click on the thumbnails to get a larger image! smile.gif
The clearance problem was the rear. From your last post I can see you have the right idea.
35's would be cool. 7 inch rims are perfect (I think) for 33x10.50's... definitely too small for 33x12.50's. My Dad has some 33x12.50's mounted on 7 inch rims and he has to deflate them so they don't just wear on the centre of the tire!
With my 3 inch block in the back of my Cherokee, the rear tires still fill up the rear wheel well entirely! (it needs to be lifted a slight bit more).

Just stay with the 7" rim and you should be fine.
I have 8" rims on my '87 with 4" of lift and I rub bad in the rear under full flex. 31x10.5
I ran 33x12.5's with 3" of lift and WT axles. Trimming was required in the rear but had no rubbing problems. 33x10.5's would probably work if you trim 2 or so inches off the rear fenders openings.
Adam
They are on !
33x10.5's on a Wagoneer with 2.5" of lift.
So how much did I cut ?
None in the front but I may still, as they clear fine on pavement but on the trail may be different story. I'll just have to see if they rub next time i'm out.
The rears...
Not much at all. The rear edge of the fender only needed triming on the inside of the fender lip. It looks stock from more than 5 feet away. The front edge only needed 1" removed at the rocker panel only. The rest of the fender had 1 inch or more clearance from the tire.
I should have my digi camera back in a week or so and I will post pictures then.
Now...
I just have to get on with that SOA... :D
Thanks for all your input, it really helped.

Cool Kris,
By the dogleg, I meant the frt edge of the rear fender under the door. Sorry about the time to get back to you but I don't always go back and check on advice things unless there have have been several posts after mine.

Hey 81wagphil, welcome! Another 909 guy, as we've been called in the past. We are trying to get a bunch of us SoCal guys together soon. Look forward to meeting you. Do you take your wag out very frequently?
We'll have to talk

That is where I cut about 1 inch off. I also cut an inch or so from the rear edge but tapered it from the inner fender lip straight down to the "dog leg" then back at an angle. Looks almost stock there.

The SOA is in the works and I'm keeping the AAL's. Will be about 9-10" total.
