My mechanic says my engine control module is not working.

How can I diagnose whether the computer itself is dead? Or if there's a wiring problem?

It does not have to be dead to be bad. Some auto parts stores (Autozone, if you dare)can check them, usually for free, but do not buy a Wells replacement.

ooo... cool info. Thanks. I don't mind rolling over to autozone.

And just to make sure, it IS the black box that comes out from under the dash?

The ignition module is on the driver's front inner fender. There really is no computer to control these engines. Its just an electronic box on the inner fender.

Im pretty sure mine has a very early computer. It's a 1985 and it's a Calif vehicle, if tat makes a difference.

In fact, I pulled little black box out from under my dash and took it apart. The circuit board inside has like a burn mark on the bottom. I think that mans it's dust.

Is this a major issue with performance? Or just a smog thing?
