View Full Version : TFI upgrade MUST retain 1.35 ohm resistor wire in IGN lead
Veepster

there was a discussion a while back regarding if the IGN resistor wire was necessary with the TFI upgrade....answer: YES, YES and YES........a $50 tow, a new ignition box and a bunch of cussing solved that problem.....

I'll throw this one out there again:
We know that the TFI system uses "some" resistance, but exactly how much? Can anyone track down an unmolested TFI-equipped F*rd and find out? (I would *guess* that it uses more voltage than a can-type coil.)

It's not the coil you have to worry about, it's the ignition module. The module cannot handle the higher voltage and will overheat and fail.

You are talking the resistance wire that is currently on the stock wags, right?

Michael F........you are 100% correct...I found out the hard way!...I thought it had to do with the coil but the ignition module is the weak link......but removing the resistance wire will eventually kill the coils too....or removing the resistance wire kills the ignition module which in turn kills the coil...........moral of the story...don't remove the resistance wire!
JeepBob...yes, the ignition feed resistance wire

Well I'm in good shape then as I just put the tfi coil connector on the end of the existing wires.

yep!...it was ugly...
I stopped a mile from my house to get gas, FSJ would not start....after an hour of diagnosing I called AAA, so he puts my Chero on the flatbed and hooks up my trailer with my Veepster behind the flatbed......I get it all home and install my spare ignition box....still doesn't work!!..it turns out my spare was bad....so Monday AM I go to NAPA to buy parts to get my chero fixed because I need it to tow the trailer back to my friends shop because I can't leave a trailer at my condo...it was a long day!!.....the good news was I took a second in my class......overall a little frustrating but it works fine now....it was fun meeting you and your boys, I hope those tires and rims work out for you...

Clark, the one I know is for resistor color codes. Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Goes Willingly. Or
Black = 0
Brown = 1
Red = 2
Orange = 3
Yellow = 4
Green = 5
Blue = 6
Violet = 7
Grey = 8
White = 9
I don't know the resistor wire color codes if there is such a thing if there is enlighten me.

Hey Veep I thought you had gone back to the risistor wire on your rig. When we were hashing this out the last time, I just assumed that you had. Sorry to hear of your problem. But thanks for letting us all know for sure. We won't have to suffer the same fate. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif
