OK....I know some of this has been discussed in various ways before, and I'd asked a general question on this a few weeks back. Been driving the car mostly and finally got the J10 jacked up and checked the brakes/bearings as best I could.

I checked the diff fluid/gasket a little over a week ago and put in a new gasket and fluid. Also checked for "play" in both rear wheels then and nothing that seemed out of ordinary. Same noise with new diff fluid. Kind of a grating/revolution sound in the rear end.

OK....pulled off the drums and looked at the brakes. Left side drum is pretty rusty and in iffy shape....brakes are "ok" but I'm thinking of doing ALL new while I'm at this one...even new drums. Check the right(pass.) side and whoah....greasy, grimey all over. Caked on the brakes, inside of the drum, and looking like it's coming out of the axle. "Seal"??? Could this be a dead seal and then the bearing going now? With the grating sound, just curious if that sounds likely?

Obviously, it looks like a notable cleanup and full rear brake job(have to clean the junk off anyway), and rear bearings as well. I had checked on prices last week and can get the bearings pressed at a local parts shop pretty reasonably. They'd mentioned I have an "inner seal" to deal with. I'd also found mention of the inner race needing to be slide-pulled out. I'll grab the TSM and look the info over tonight, but wondering if this is sounding right to those who know better?

I'm figuring all new for brakes as I just want to do this once and get a lot of good miles out of the rear end yet! Will cost a little more, but I want this to last sometime now!

Thanks for any ipput.

I just pulled out 2 sets of bearings and never had any problem they will pull out by hand I used the grab hooks from my gear puller one in each hand and hooked them behind the race and give a little jerk out they come no problem only time these seem to need a slide hammer is if they got hot and cooked in there

Definetly a bad bearing. Need to replace this as soon as you can to prevent loosing a wheel or welding your race right into the rear end. I had a Bronco II that I let the rear bearing get real bad and I ended up having to replace the entire rearend. Good luck.
