If anyone cares, the other day I had the Jeep in at the dealer for a compression test and the mechanic mentioned there was a service bulletin for the tailgate switch. They will replace it under warranty. In case yours is bad, you may want to look into this. Nothing beats warranty work on a 20 year old Jeep.

I wonder what they would say to a taigate that was a 1985 GW motor & tracks in a 1979 Cherokee skin mounted on a 1970 Wagoneer. ;)

DITTO LOL, but at least I have 3 safety switches now, course none are hooked up.

I've found you don't need safety switches when there's 1x4's in the tailgate holding the window up!

get out of town! You mean the safety switch on the side, or the actual up and down tailgate switch?

This looks like it's for just 1987's, probably others years got recalled too, but can you imagine if every 1987 wag showed up at the dealerships over say a 1 week period of time across the country.
LOL. These guys would freak.

I hate to burst bubbles but... most recall work done by a dealer is only good for 10 years after the issue the recall. I had a '92 Subaru I wanted a dealer to look at for a door lock recall issued in '92. They pretty much said ya right and laughed me right out the door. They will do it but you will pay.

The recall does not replace the switch, I got
the recall parts from a dealer a few years ago
for a 83 Cherokee, the kit contains only the
shiny stuff on the outside, i.e the key cover
and mount ring.

As far as a date limitation, I am not sure if
there is one on saftey recalls. The dealer
really does not care he gets paid, but what you
will need no matter what tail gate is on your
rig is a Vin number that comes up as being in the
recall group and has not had the recall work done.

There is no statute of limitations on NHTSA safety recalls. It doesn't expire until the stock of parts for that vehicle does.

Anyway, I checked with the dealer and DC - the recall fix only replaces the lock cylinder, the trim around it, and that's about it. They do not repair the switch. However, they do still have tons of the cylinders in stock and they are required to perform it. Mine has not had the recall done (per VIN), so they're going to do it next Tuesday.

It's not like it's significant, but hey, new free Jeep parts are new free Jeep parts.

20 years ago my girl friend got the recall notice on her '83 Cherokee. When we called the dealer they said they weren't replacing anything just disabling the switch on the tailgate (it was a safety thing) so that only the switch on the dash would work. Needless to say we did not take it in. But then knowing that dealer it is also possible they were doing things they weren't supposed to.
