My 1979 Chreokee seems all stock but the engine
has a 4bbl iron EGR AMC intake manifold but
only 2bbl 360s were available in 1979. The
emissions information under the hood says 360
manual trans but how can I really tell what I
have? The manuals I have say to check a decal on
the valve cover but it is missing.

At least it still runs!

Look on the drivers side of the block just under the engine mount. It will say if it is a 401 or 360. It is cast into the side of the block in about two inch numbers.

crawl under it and look at the block hidden under the motor mount there will be a size casted into the block under the motor mount.

it is large about 1.2" letters, should read 360 or 401...

I think it is on the driver side, look hard, it took me three times under it to find it... you have to get at just the right angle to see it, or you may be able to reach up and feel the letters..

its on the passenger side, i found it was best to jack it up, and crawl around w/ a flashlight, try to avoid any puddles if yours leaks like mine smile.gif

Just looked at the block in the garage. It is on both the drivers and the passengers side.

The one in my garage came out of a 79 but I am pretty sure that it was in a 73 or earlier originally because of a few things. One is that the timing cover has the old style markings. Another is that all the exhaust mainfold bolt holes are the same size unlike the engine I have in now that is from 80. On that one the bolt holes on the inside are larger than the ones on the outside. So it is hard to say.

Edit: Ok I posted this and then I got curious. I went out and looked on my wags engine and the 360 is on both sides of the block on that engine as well. :D .

My motors all say it on both sides.
