View Full Version : How to replace wheel bearings?

I know i need them in rear . SHould I just do all 4? Should I do brakes at same time? How much of a pain is it? Do I need any specail tools? This is on my 68 wag

Yes you need a press to get the bearing off the shaft. You can remove the axle shaft from the rear, taking off the brake line,all rear brake hardware, undo bolts from backing plate through hole in axle, may need a slide hammer to get the axle out, then you will need to take it to a shop to have them pressed on and off. Haynes manual will give you the basic info.

As far as the front. You will need the hub socket to remove the funky hub nut inside the hub, you can get this at most auto parts stores, you will also need ring pliers. Wheel bearing grease,inner and outer bearings and seals. All this is pretty easy, but if it is your first time follow the haynes manual...it goes into it pretty good.

I do my own, however- they cosst $50 per/side at a shop. for something nthat needs to bedone every 3 yrs - cheaop!!!!!!!!!!!

My '76 QuadraTrac uses the same socket to remove the funky hub nut as a F@rd 4x4 uses. :eek:

So I can do the front in my driveway but in order to do the rears I need to remove the axle?

youll need to remove the axle shafts. not the whole axle assembly.
