OK, here are some more
There is a little dome in the overhead console that sticks out. Looks like a infrared reciever for something. Was thinking keyless entry?? But No little switch came with it.
The two rear lights on the overhead won't come on. Any ideas? Haven't check the bulbs yet, but will.
Also the front two reading lights are wierd. If you turn one on, it comes on, but if you try to turn the other one on while the first one is on, it just turns the first one on and off. The light for the button you are pushing doesn't come on. If you shut of the first light with it's own switch, the other light will then respond if you hit it's button. Make sense??
Oh yeah, the fuel gauge. It reads full for a long time after filling up, and then drops pretty darn fast when the fuel gets low. It is empty when the gaudge hits about 1/4 full. Any ideas what the problem might be?
Thanks for the help
Ted

yes the little dome is for keyless sntry ,someone on here was saying if you take the console down there should be a code on a box up there and this is the code you need and can send off for the transmitters ,the fuel gauge sounds normal from everyones i have heard haven't gotten to drive my 89 yet so not sure ,but you can belive that i'm going to fill up before it gets to 1/4 tank ...lol about the lights ...don't know what to tewll you but look at your wireing when you have the console down for the keyless entry

Any suggestions on how to take down the console? Mine has 'issues' as well, and I have a free day today in which to tackle them. The Haynes is, as usual, no help at all.

This is probably the funniest set of messages I've read in a while. I have a 91 Wag and have ALL of those problems! HA! Now I know what the little dome is.......thanks! My fuel gage does the same thing. I've checked the wiring (especially the ground). Replacing it was next. I'm kind of getting used to it.

I don't remember if the number is under for keyless entry. It is about $80 to get a new aftermarket one that will work once programed. Might be cheaper to by an aftermarket set that used radio waves instead. Much more reliable. I'm thinking of doing the same thing.
The counsole is easy to get down. There is a screw under the garage door opener and on in front by the windshield. you will have to feel for the hole. it is under the material. I found mine because there was already a hole there from the DSPO taking it down. The whole thing then slide forward and off. Pretty easy.
The rear lights will only come on with the door(makes sense huh?) The front ones will not. I would check by the front driver side rear door piller. that is where the wiring goes up overhead. There will be a connector near the seat under the carpet. Mine was corroded and the DSPO "bypassed it" stupid.
As far as the front lights, I would guess maybe someone had it opened up and screwed up the wiring trying to fix something else. If I remember correctly. there is power going thru the circuit all the time(for rear lights anyway) and when you cut power to one of the wires(there are 3 I believe) the light will come on. I think there are also three wires to the front lights. One continues to the rear. anyway. Don't know if that helps any or is just rambling.
Gas gauge sending unit is probably bad, Mine is just the opposite. when you fill it up it only goes to 5/8 tank. @ 1/4 tank you have about 3/8 to half left.

Some friends of mine in a band, were playing at a club where I was doin sound one night... during theyre set, someone broke into the back room of the bar and stole a few leather jacket's, wallet's ect. (idiots for leaving anything backstage first of all.)
Anyhoo, also taken were two sets of car keys.. both for Grand Chero's.
Long story short.. the set of keys that had a working keyless entry was used to walk around the parking lot listning for a click.. and that was the jeep they stole and wrapped around a phone pole a Mile away.. (unfortunaly exactly as I had predicted a few min before we found out what had happend.. "dont worry it will end up wrapped around a pole within the hour im sure" sure enough it did)
I dont trust those things. Kinda like those automatic doors on minivan's.. that is a death waiting to happen (hope not but seems like a kid or pet could buy the farm if one of those malfunctioned)
Friend of mine had a durango that would unlock itself cause the stupid key thing was goin bad and you would lock it and the bad switch would unlock it again. usually when he had already gotten out of range to notice or hear it doing it.

Are you guys sure that behind the dome isn't a little camera so Big Brother can keep an eye on our Top Secret-F.S.J Activity? I don't have a transmitter and will not be buying one anytime soon.(especially after the Wagoneer meets pole story.)Anyway, my story's more interesting. As far as the gas tank situation,When full my 90 G.W. acts the same way. It's like heaven for 20 miles, then BAMMM!It's like one of those dreams where Shania Twain is really diggin you and then right before the good stuff starts the alarm goes off.Reality wins again! As far as the 1/4 tank empty thing,I've never let it get that low so thanks for the info, I think you just saved me alot of grief.MAK

Dropped the console, saw a bunch of wires and circuit board. Couldn't figure out how to get the d*mn thing apart! My rear lights work just fine. The fronts, on the other hand, work when they want to. Sometimes they both work, and individually they're fine--when I have both on at the same time, they dim to about the same level as a good butane lighter. The compass/temp display worked ONCE and has now gone to the Twilight Zone of electronics.
THIS is why my guitar amplifier is tube-powered. If it breaks, I grab a Jesus stick (sorry, but that's what they're called) and a soldering gun and go to work.

FYI, I don't think you have to take the console apart to program the keyless entry. The overhead console in the FSJs is identical to the one I had in my '94 Grand Cherokee. The transmitters from the dealer are about $100. I think there are aftermarket units made for the Grand Cherokees that should work for the FSJ.
I loved having an overhead console when I had the Cherokee. They didn't start putting them in the FSJs until '89.
