Back ground: I have a '66 j-3600 with a 327 and power steering.
probleme is that the pump is shot and the gear box destroyed (don't ask me how, I got it abandoned). I can not find a pump for the life of me so I'm thinking of just converting it to manual so I have an operating truck until I can either find a pump or figre out how to mount a GM box and pump. how hard would the conversion be and do manual boxes and power box's have the same bolt pattern. it is also to my understanding that commanders use the same box, is this true? (no pre '74 trucks in any junkyard in town.)
Sorry for the long post

I went the other way on a 69 (manual to power)and it was a bolt in so it should be the same going back. I also think that you could use a GM car steering gear box.

The '66-'71 eepster Commando used the Ross box. The '72-'73 Jeep Commando used the Saginaw box.

I don't know what the early J trucks used, but I'm sure somebody here will chime in with the correct answer.

did my research. it's a siginaw box and the pump is eaton. so that get's the box out of the way, it will be easy to find a replacment for it.

Jeepbob, do you have a 360?
thanks

Naoa carries replacement gear boxes for the Saginaw set-up, and pumps, although I'm not sure of the brand. Price was comparable to some local junkyard quotes.
Funny you had trouble finding P/S parts. When I was looking to replace my manual, Power was all I could find. Even if the Parts Description said manual.
Good luck

When I went to the power from manual on my 67 I used a box from a 79. The 79 saginaw box is held on by 4 bolts and the 67 is held on by three. The three bolts do match up with the 79 saginaw box and the frame. This is just one more thing to consider.

Hey 67Glad, how is that box working for you?

Hey PC
Long time! Steering box went on like a charm and it seems good. I still can't turn the wheels, but now it's an issue of tire size. I wrote ages ago to tell you that I was happy with it, but you never wrote back --- figured I'd P----d you off somehow.
Thanks so much for hooking me up

I have a similar problem also but I got the pump and the box from another Gladiator that had Power steering. My truck also came with the 327. The other issue is I want to switch the steering shaft beacause when my old manual box went out the shaft "got the shaft" smile.gif so now I don't want to deal with that ruber conection between the the box and the shaft, and I want to get a new shaft from Flaming River if you guys have heard of them. Have any of you guys had to deal with that and put a different steering shaft in at all? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

the pump is the same as rambler 1958 to 1969 as long as you use your resivor the box is the same gm pass car 1964 to 1969 a body as long as the steering box mounts behind the front wheel on the gm not in front of the wheel diff would be the pitman arm spline offset box 707 in the37th hollender pump 89 w/A.I.R and 41 w/o A.I.R
