OK, working on my starter problem.

This is what it does:
Turns over strong and fine when cold, then does a "half turn" and then nothing when it is warm.

I've checked my timing, 8 BTD and changed starters.

Any thoughts??

Thanks
-Jim

Is the battery negative cable bolted to the engine block and are all the battery connections clean and tight? Still sounds like a starter problem to me.

Sounds like a starter problem to me too. I wouldn't rule out the starter even if it was replaced. I replaced my starter a few months ago because it was acting like yours and it worked for about a week then the new starter took a Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley. I took the new one back, got another one and it's been fine since.

You need a new starter. When stater motors operate they create dust inside the housing. The older it gets the more dust builds up. When the starter motor is cold the dust is not a problem but when hot it sort of shorts out the field wiring causing a drop in amps and the dragging sound. Replace the starter with a high quality rebuilt one and the problem is solved. Good luck.

Jim,
I have the same problem with my truck. My problem seems to be heat saturation of the starter from the headers (po installed). These particular headers run within 1/2" of the starter housing and you know how hot headers get!
I am traveling to town tomorrow for header wrap and will install it tomorrow evening. I will post here and let you know if it helps my problem. If it doesn't, I guess I'll go the way of the new starter... :(

I have a mini-style high torque starter and used a GM aluminum heatshield. I also have loosely wrapped headers. I posted on this a while back.

Mine was just doing this the other day and it turned out my battery was fried and it was only a year old. Have somebody check your battery. Awhile back I did run three seperate grounds and that made a huge difference in the way the starter spun the motor.
