I'm about to change the chain in a 229 transfer case. Any tips?

Do you just crack the case in half and swap it out? I don't want a floor full of little roller bearings running around.

And are there any tips to checking out the VC while I'm in there? I understand if there's no metallic-looking fluid loose and there's some resistance when you try to turn it, it's OK. Right?

Get the book...get a white clean sheet...get your favorite wrench set and go for it...set the xfer case on the sheet (to collect what drops) ...as the book says... you will pull the halves apart...remove the thrust bearing and races from the front output shaft...remove the oil pump (note orientation for reass)...remove the rear output shaft...save the 15 pilot bearings...remove mainshaft "O" ring from end of shaft...remove viscous coupling...and here you go...remove front output shaft, driven sprocket and chain assy...lift the sprocket up and out and toward the main shaft and slip the chain off the drive sprocket...not too bad...email me for some drawings from the book...Regards

Yeah, DON'T lift up on the input shaft or rear output shaft, or else you'll get to play 206-needle-bearing pickup. Unlike the BW1339 Quadratrac, you can't replace the chain with the case installed in the truck.

Get a digital camera and take pictures....a lot of pictures. Everytime you removed a part, snap a picture. This has helped me in the past on other things that I have torn apart. It will slow you down on the teardown, but will speed you up on the reassembly. A box of those cheap, food-service gloves will help keep your camera clean in between takes. I haven't used the camera idea yet on my FSJ (Too cold) yet, but when I do I will distribute the pics to anyone who wants them.
