does anyone know what rating a pto off a modle 20 transfercase would be?8000LBS 9000lbs 10000lbs ect.and can it be used with a twin stick setup? and what kind of price would i pay for a compleat setup? pto vrs electric or hydrolic, which is better?thinking about a pto on the front of my rig with an electric on the rear.

the model 20 pto replaces the pan on the bottom of the xfer, and i believe runs off of the straight tooth part of the intermediaet gear(tho i could be wrong here).you can run it with a twin stick shifter. the transfer case must be in neutral to engage the pto, deosnt really matter if you use 1 or 2 levers to put it there smile.gif
ecpect to pay anywhere up to $250-$300 for a d20 pto. send email to Herm Tilford <hermtheoverdriveguy@yahoo.com> he gets them on occasion. im not real sure if the pto will work with the 2.46 or 3.15 low ranges. herm told me that he thot that it would, since it runs off of a straight cut part of the gear.you might want to check into it if lower low range is gonna be a future mod,so you dont spend a bunch of money getting the pto set up,only to find out that your now stuck with a 2.03 low range.
dont forget that the t18 also has a pto port, wich is another option, and it may be easier to find than the d20 pto.the port looks exactly like the pto port on my sm465,i need figure out if your standard sm465 pto would bolt onto the t18...
i am running a pto winch in the bed,and i really like it. even in a single ine pull it is a strong mother.my 3/4 ton xj freind popped a tire off the bead, and was stuck real bad.we wer pullig him into a berm trying to get him out.my pto winch was strong enuff to pull my front wheels off the ground(was parked in a slight downward incline, and anchored to a tree) and when he finally popped over the berm,we discovered much to our horror that the winch was strong enuff to bend the main leaf on his brand new tuff country leaf spring into a S shape  one other time the x/4 ton xj(seems like whenever i get the winch cable out,i hook it to him ;) ) got high centered, and a big mudhole prevented me from being in front of him,so we rigged it up with a pulley. he was inching forward till the tree we had the pulley on fell over! it was about 10 inches in diameter.
the only real disadvantage of a pto or hyraulic winch is the fact that your engine must be running. long steady pulls are no prollem with a pto/hydro winch, and ive pulled my friends 2 jeeps connected together about 75 feet up a hill that an electric winch prolly would have had to stop and cool down several times.
ok having said all that, you may want to consider doing it the other way around. one reason my winch is in the bed(besides the fact that its HUGE-prolly waaaay to big to be on the front.jeep would promptly fall forward onto the grill smile.gif ) is the fact that it looks like a real nightmare to run the shaft up front, past the xmenber, exhaust, and front axle. i like my pto winch for rear extraction and rescuing friends, but id really like to add a small,lightweight,8000 lb or so electric winch on my front bumper for those times when i need to winch myself forward,up a hill, over a boulder,or whatever. also for the times that the engnie is for whatever reason not running-like maybe when its under 6 feet of water  which is a situation ive been in before...
last and not least,i wish id made my pto shaft out of at least a 1" shaft, instead of 3/4",and i also wish id used bigger chain to drive the winch.i used the smallest available, and when you reaaaaaallly put a load on it(like when my front wheels were off the ground) it jumps teeth. eventually i will remake it,but ive got close to $100 in u joint and yokes, flanges, sprockets, carrier bearings, etc.
the pull rating will depend on the winch, not on the pto. i think my winch is very conservatively rated at 8000 lbs. as to which is better, its amost apples and oranges, each has disadvantages. i somewhat prefer the pto to a hydraulic, but not for any real reason, other than you now have mre fluids to potentialy leak, and you have to mount a seprate pump somewhere. but, thats i guess really no worse than designing and installing a pto driveshaft.
i think your idea of an elecric, along with a pto or hydro,is a good choice

Pound for pound, PTO winches outperform electrics any day. The pto itself will run a 8-9K style winch no problem and pull a lot harder than a similar electric. J20

Two things determine the rating of a PTO winch. The winch it self, its manufactures specific rating. Next is the PTO and drive shafts. It all goes hand in hand. The PTO is a far better winch in a lot of ways over electric, in others its a pain. I drove tow truck and ran a lot of PTO and Hydraulic winches. I think Hydraulic wins hands down. If I decide to run a winch I would opt for Hydraulic. ;)

hey crazy, arent most tow truck hydro winches run off of a pump thats driven by a pto?or are some actually driven by a an engine belt driven pump? id think the pto driven pump would make a heck of a difference over a power steeering pump.maybe another thing to consider when designing the winch system.the pto and pump could be somewhat midship, and lines run up front easier than a pto shaft. would the long hoses decrease the efficiency of a hydro winch?

Yes, Hydro winches are run off a PTO pump. The fact it would be a lot easier to run the lines to the winch instead of the drive shaft for a PTO winch is much more desirable. Longer lines do not reduce the operation of the winch in anyway. Some of the Tow trucks I ran, were PTO powered pumps with the controls at the rear of the truck it had a 18' deck then the lines would run back to the winch this would give it about 35' of pressure line, routed from Pump to controls and back to winch behind the cab, a return line was only about 4' long Tank was under the deck. The closer the reservoir is to the pump is more key, than the distance the winch is from the pump. Some nice things about the Hydro winch is its SMOOTH operation and never smoking brake bands or trying to shift PTO winches into line in or line out. Hydro winch is instant control line in or out just by switching direction of control. Electric solenoids are also used on some controls making it even nicer. There are many styles of winches of Hydro winches. There are winches that run off Power steering pumps Warn and M/M sell those. I would myself would just buy an industrial Hydro Winch and install and set it up myself.
