My Haynes manual was a casualty in the big Oil Spill of Easter 2001 and I'm about to take my dash out to dye it. I'm wondering if there any hidden dangers I should know about seeing as I'm pulling it with out any reference.

If you do decide to pull the glass remember that the windshield comes out bottom first and goes in top first. I have pulled these things and saved the seal, but it is much less likely to break if you cut the seal to free the glass and then replace it with a new one.

Y'know, I don't know if I've ever seen anyone post about having trouble finding new windshields for the later fsj's. Leaves me wondering; at what year do the windshields get more difficult to find?

Yikes! Remove the windshield? I wonder what one of those mobile glass places would charge to come do it? I does have a leak in the lower drivers corner, how much for a new seal?

they charge about a benjamin (your price may vary based on location and the companies need for business), but they will not warranty it if it breaks while they pull it. new seal was about $89 thru specialty jeep.
i pulled mine myself (not too bad of a job, just had to be real careful so as not to snap the glass) and had a mobile glass co come out and install it for $60 after I was done painting the dash.
And yes, you do have to pull the windshield to get to the bolts that hold the top of the dash along the underside of the windshield

Mike,
You did exactly what I thik I'll do. Remove the glass myself and have an expert replace it. The only shop I've contacted so far quoted $75 to come and put it in.

I had a mobile glass company come out to my house with a new windshield.... $135 for the new windshiled!!!! of course I didn't pay for it, that's why I have free auto glass coverage. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Just to remove the dash pad itself .... the windshiled REALLLY needs to come out????
No other way????? This can be a bummer....I am ruprised to hear this myself....

GEMOBX/77/401,
O.K. you've got my attention. If I cut away the old seal will my chances of a damage free removal incease? What exactly is the best techique to use for removal? At what part of the operation am I most likely to break the thing? (Oops, bad mojo to even mention it!) I sure wouldn't mind doing it myself and cutting the total bill for the job in half. I'm going to replace the seal on a rear window too so maybe I can use that job as practice for the front glass.

TO REMOVE THE WINDSHIELD #1 DON'T CUT OUT THE SEAL.ONLY IF YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT. #2 REMOVE CHROME MOLD ON THE OUTSIDE.#3 OIL GUN WITH OIL IN IT MOTOR OIL!! TAKE THE OIL GUN AND FROM THE INSIDE OF YOUR FSJ,OIL THE LIP OF THE RUBBER BETWEEN THE PINCH WELD AND THE RUBBER,DO THE SAME ON THE RUBBER ON THE OUTSIDE,THEN FROM THE INSIDE START AT ONE CORNER AT THE TOP AND PUSH WITH THE PALM OF YOUR HAND ON THE GLASS AND AT THE SAME TIME TAKE YOUR OTHER HAND AND WITH YOUR FINGERS PULL THE RUBBER LIP DOWN AT THE SAME TIME YOU ARE PUSHING WITH YOUR OTHER HAND!!! WORK YOUR WAY TO THE CENTER AND DOWN THE SIDE JUST A LITTLE, OF THE GLASS,AND KEEP GOING TILL THE TOP IS OUT. YOU MUST KEEP STEADY PRESSURE, NOT TO HARD!!!!!!!! IF YOU GET IT ON A TWIST IT'LL CRACK!!TAKE YOUR TIME** ONCE THE TOP IS OUT ,GO TO THE OUTSIDE AND TAKE THE GLASS OUT.. I'LL TELL YOU HOW TO PUT IT IN, JUST LET ME KNOW!! GEMOBX/77/401

FYI,
I just had the mobile auto glass guy in Baltimore put in a new windshield and reuse the rubber seal. (MD inspection made me do the replacement.)Glass and labor $135. One day no problem finding the new glass. Thought it was a good deal.

agree, save it - see other post on Windshield, Part 2
THEN FROM THE INSIDE START AT ONE CORNER AT THE TOP
no, these seals are designed to release the glass from the bottom -- DO NOT start from the top! the top has a huge overhang on the lip, YOU WILL crack your glass if you start pushing from the top because you will be trying to push the glass thru the overhanging rubber.
YOU MUST KEEP STEADY PRESSURE, NOT TO HARD
yep
WHY PAY SOMEONE TO DO THE EASY PART?
In my experience taking it out was about 10 minutes of me working solo without any issues, I'd never done this before and using common sense I was fine. I watched 2 experienced mobile glass guys fight/twist/wrestle/etc my old glass back in, no way I'd do that myself.
I too was quoted $135 for new glass, installed. Use that as your backup figure so that if your glass breaks you're covered. I told my installers to bring a new windshield out with them just in case my old one snapped

*technically* no it does not need to come out, but if you do not take it out it would be very difficult to get the dash out, there are 5 or 6 1/2" bolts that attach the dash to the body that run under the bottom lip of the windshield seal. trying to fold the seal up, get the socket in there, and then pulling the dash out low (comes out easier if you pull it straight off the body towards you), and then trying to thread those bolts when reinstalling would be a nightmare -- and with a dash pad - fagedaboutit. easier to pull the glass IMHO
besides you get to clean up any rust that has settled in on the lip for the seal!

If you already have leaks or the rubber is starting to detiorate or you just want new seal cut the rubber with a razor knife by going with the blade between the glass and rubber, with the handle on the glass. Once the glass is fully exposed the the glass will come out very easily.

As usual this forum proves itself to be invaluable and a great gathering space for years of jeep experience. While some opinions vary they are always appreciated! No wonder I visit this site 3 times a day. Thanks guys! Now time to find a windshield seal.

While shopping around on the phone for quotes on installation (labor only) a confused phone gal told me $199.00 for glass and labor. Don't come to Dallas for glass!
