i think my clutch is going out on me because i am loosing speed going uphill, it does not like to pickup speed and it started squelling on me and my truck did not move at first, how hard would it be to change the clutch in my 79 j10 with inline 6 and what would be the best clutch to go with?

Well, get a buddy to help. The T18 is HEAVY and has a long shaft. First I would take out the transfer case, clean it and chain the oil. Then pull the transmission from the bell housing. Drop the starter and pull the bell housing. There it is. Unbolt and remove. Go ahead and have the fly wheel turned!!!! It is worth the $$$$. An unturned flywheel will glaze the clutch and destroy it. As far as what kind...well what is your rig used for? A stock is fine for Normal use. A centerforce for heavy duty stuff. Also go with a 11 inch clutch. I bought mine from a guy on Ebay. The whole kit was $105 shipped. No problems. Take no shortcuts or you will be doing it again sooner than you think. Good Luck!!

First: Make sure you're not having fuel delivery problems, which seems like a pretty standard problem on our FSJs.
If it's your clutch, I'd get either a stock replacement or a stage 1 Centerforce. Be sure to remove your flywheel and have it re-surfaced. If you don't, you could end up with vibrations and shudders on take-off. Your trannya and trans-case are VERY heavy. Use a floor-jack and jack-stands if you don't have access to a hoist.
I'd allow a half-day for removal, a day for the machine shop to re-surface the flywheel, and a day for installation. But I tend to work kinda slow, so you could be faster.
I have massive shaking and vibrations at take off! I had my engine rebuilt about 2 years ago and had them replace the clutch with a heavy duty one. From the day I got it back I have had to give a lot of gas in order not to have it shake to pieces. I took it back twice and they said it was do to the "heavy duty" clutch. I paid them to resurface the flywheel. I wonder now if they really did. To this day I have to rev the rpms in order for it not to vibrate. Am I ruining my clutch if the flywheel was never resurfaced?
Also the transmission and transfer case seem to leak bad! Almost a constant drop hangs from the bottom of both. Is this fairly common? Come to think of it, I was out this weekend and had problems with getting into gear on a few occasions.

Well, as far as the shaking at take off, mine does it also and I know my flywheel was turned. I put it in myself. Think it could be something else?
