I need to change the pinion seal on my J20 D60 (Full Float rear). It is leaking badly and I don't want sand in my diff.

What is involved in changing this? Is it just remove the pinion nut and yoke, change the seal, and then reinstall the nut and yoke then torque to spec? I want to make sure there is no crush sleeve to mess up. Also how much torque should I put on it?

Thanks.

Bob

I did it on a dana 44 a long time ago.. and I didn't sweat the crush sleeve.. I've put maybe 1000 miles on since.. and most of that in 4wheel drive it leaks again.. but thats do to having a worn pinion. It's working fine.. I don't know that this is the right method.. and it probably isn't. It did work for me on my 44.

I bought a service manual. as soon as it gets here I hope to find out that there isn't a crush sleeve in there and then I can just torque it.

Thanks.

If you mark the nut and count the visible threads then put it back in the same spot, you'll be alright.

The pinion bearing preload is set by shims, and not by how tight you tighten the nut. Just loosen the nut, take off the yoke, replace the seal, put back on the yoke, and tighten it back up tight so it never comes loose. Done. (Don't count threads.)

That is what I was hoping for. I am going to order one tomorrow.

Thanks.
