So (thanks to the expert advise of y'all) I've decided to replace my recently split NP229 with a NP208. However, an interesting question was raised on the for sale/traqde side of things.

Do I have to get the levers from an NP208 that was behind a TF727 (as it will be installed) or will the levers that sat behind the T176 fit also?

Thanks,

Phil

Phil,
Since the 208 from a manual trans will have the shift lever straight up through the top of the tunnel like any conventional part-time case and the 208's from behind a 727 had the shift lever off the side of the tunnel me thinks there's a conflict between the normal shifter linkage and the AT linkage??? That's just a guess though unless maybe AMC just moved the AT/208 linkage off to the side so the shifter doesn't detract from the luxo looks of the Wag smile.gif I think I still have the two 208 linkage pics in my puter if you want them to compare.

I run a 5 speed in my 82 and in the 83 (both J-10's) is a auto. The lever on the 208 in both of them looks the same. Thats the lever on the 208 itself. The difference is in the shift levers.

joe,

If I could see the pics that would be great. I think the shift linkage for the tranny is forward and off to the side on the valve body. I don't think it would hurt anything if it came straight up, 'cept my plans for a center console.

Dive,

I replaced my 727/229 with a T176/208 combo. When I installed the 208 I recall that I had a choice of using the lever under the seat or shifter. The only difference is the length of the link between them.

Is that link easy to modify or replace if I can only get a t-case from a manual? I wouldn't mind at all if re-used my Hi-N-Lo lever for the new t-case. That would really be convenient.

Thanks for the help

Phil

PS: Is the T176 a 5 speed with Overdrive? Just curious.

Thanks for the pics and the info joe. Me thinks that I could make either one work, but that it would be easier with the lever from the automatic.

Thanks

Phil,
I don't have a pic of the lever to shifter but is the T176/T18 and 208 shifter.

It would be pretty easy to add the 208 shifter to your tranny hump, just cut a square sized hole and bolt the shifter to it. I like it, find this tcase shifter by far the easiest I have used.

Phil,
Be sure to double-check the spline count for the tranny output shaft (your 727) and make sure it matches the spline count on the input of the 208. I've read someone having this problem.

from what i hear the only 208 you can use is the one from behind a t-176. thats the one that matches up with the 727 spline count. otherwise plan on swaping out input? or output? shafts and that would bring the cost up considerbly.

Thanks for all the help and advice guys. Joe gave me some awesome diagrams and I was able to pick up the linkage/shifter from an auto J20 and an auto G-wag. I'm trying to hook up with LaJ10 for the actual T-case this weekend, but I am super psyched. This should be just a bolt-in swap. I'll keep you updated!!

Check out this site for pics of my recently toasted NP-229 and pics of linkage for the NP-208 and NP-229 side by side.
