I've been trying to diagnose why my heater and A/C fans and compressor quit simultaneously. My question is, of all the wires going into the heater control panel, which one is hot (or supposed to be because none of mine are). If I find that the "hot" wire is not, can I splice it to any 12v lead that is hot only when ignition is on?
Thanks.

I would not. There is an open circuit some where that needs to be found. You start butchering the wiring and you are asking for trouble. Go buy a haynes or chilton book and find the wiring diagrams and start tracing. I would hate to hear of a FSJ succumbing to fire from messing with the wiring.

Buy a Haynes manual. Well worth it for instructions as well as wiring diagrams.
Way too many things rely on something else to make tham work, so splicing a hot wire may not cure the problem, plus cause more.
