I just bought a 75 cherokee chief WT. When I got it the front drive shaft was out of it. I got one at the bone yard and threw it in today. I was able to shift into 4wd but now I cant get it to dis-engage. It has a 401 with an auto tranny. I have no idea what t case it has. It has a knob in the glove box for part time 4wd and 2wd. I dont see a 4hi/4lo lever anywhere.
If anyone could tell me what the procedure is for engaging/disengaging the 4wd in this vehicle please help me out!!!

I have a very stubborn danaspicer 20. Here's what I do:
1) Engage in 4WD. Unlock hubs. Go reverse 6 feet.
2) Return to 2WD. Drive a few yards forward.
3) Still in 4WD cause none of this is working.
4) Try about 25 combinations of this until you are very angry and then it will slip into 2WD.
The problem, of course, is you have no idea how you did it by this time.
--Brent, who's hopin you get a much wiser answer than this....

ok...if it's a 75 chero you've got QuadraTrek. It is always in 4 wheel drive. There is a knob in the glove box that locks you axles(for off road only!). If your light is on on the dash you probably have locked axles. There should be 2 vacuum lines that run to the case....try replacing them.

Hope this helps. Also, not all QT had a low range.

As LRRH said, you are always in 4 wheel drive. The case is designed for this. Shift the knob in the glove box out of emergency and all should be well.

Don't shift that unless your in Park!
Also you might have had a part-time kit installed...and a newer sticker placed over the old on in the glove box, read this carefully...also check our archives, there is alot on the quadratrac T-case...
Good Luck..tell us how's it going..

Ok, I'll try some of those ideas. The emergency lock out light is on, and I cant get it to turn off. Thanks for the advise.

If the emergency light is on and your Quadra-Trac has not been converted to partime 4x4, then there are several methods of returning to non emergency 4x4 for regular driving. When in E-drive for an extended length of time, Quadra Tracs can get stuck in E drive. First it's very important to make sure that the two vacuum hoses from the vacuum switch on the transfer case are hooked up to the vacuum hoses that go to the E-drive switch in the glove box. Make sure they are connected to a vacuum source from the intake manifold or the vacuum ball on the center of the firewall. After you have verified that all the vacuum hoses are in fact connected and not cracked, try backing up and pulling forward on gravel, grass, or something else that does not have as much friction as dry pavement. As you do this, toggle the E-drive switch back and forth until the light goes off and not at what position the light goes off. Leave the switch in this position for normal driving. I've also had to jack the vehicle up and rest it on 4 jack stands and let all the wheels spin freely to eliminate gear bind in Quadra-Tracs which would not shift out of emergency drive. However, I'd guess that your problem probably lies in the vacuum hoses. Hope this helps.

Well, I got it out, but I'm not sure what did it. Put it back in and got stuck again. Sold it stuck in 4wd. I think was the little valve thingy or maybe the lines somewhere I couldnt see. Thanks for the tips guys!
