What tool do I need to take out the rear Diff fill plug. I have an AMC 20 and I have tried almost everything I have and nothing will fit that fill plug. Thanks guys

For most axles just use a 1/2 drive ratchet with a 1/2 extension. Should come right out. If its the style that sticks out with a square lug I use a pipe wrench.

I have tried the 1/2 inch drive with extension, I have tried the 3/8 extension. My 3/8 is to large, but only by a little. Let me guess I do not have the stock plug....

no...I dont think you have the stock plug if the hole is THAT tiny. The AMC20's I have seen use the 1/2 plug. Thats weird that 3/8's is to big, You would need to find some sorta weird nut driver to take it out I guess.

THat is what I was afraid of. Actually it is a hex head a little smaller than 3/8s Where would I find something like that.
I wonder if Autozone would have the stock plug???
I bet I will have to get it from someone here or a junkyard. The thing is I need to get it out so I can refill the diff..

DO they even sell tools like that. I guess I can go to sears tomorrow and look for something that will go inside a hex head shaped hole that is smaller than 3/8's

Hey shadow, when I did mine, I just used a socket allenwrench. I don't remember the size, But mine was just a standard allenwrench. Craig

Thanks craig, that is a thought that ran through my mind. I checked all my allens and they were all to small, but a larger one would do the trick. At least that tool will be easy to find.

if 3/8 is to big you need a 10mm

uuhmn, iirc the amc 20 plug was a 3/8 allen wrench, the dana 44 front diff used the 1/2 square inset. prolly yours is either plugged with dirt or worn out.they put it in a hard spot to reach. i had the same thing happen to me on one of the 3 i had and replaced it with a 1/2 pipe plug from a hardware store for about 50 cents. to loosen it,you may have to drift it with a dull chisel or punch

Shadow, come on down to Falkville and we'll figure it out. I'm working nights this week, so I'm in the shop everyday.

I have an AMC 20 in my CJ.
find a bolt with a hex head that fits the plug. double-nut the other end of the bolt and use a wrench to take it out.
