I have still not gotten the coil to spark.. :( :( :( :(

I have put on three different ignition mod. all do the same thing

I have tried 2 different coils, both do the same thing

I have changed out the starter relay. Same thing

I have checked the wires...a lot of them are damaged, but they should still work, but that is why I want a new harness

I have installed a new Dist. I am wondering if the new one is bad??

I guess I could look at the ignition switch, but I figure since it engages the starter then it should be sending voltage to the coil.

I have replaced the coil wire twice as well.

If when I get the new harness and install it and I still have no spark it will have to go to the shop.

It was running fine the last time it ran and everything was great, and it just stopped..

The thing that almost makes me sure it is a wiring issue is that when I swapped out the ignition mod I had a hugh backfire...as seen by the muffler pics...

I am thinking there is a short in the wires that are between the dist, ignition mod, and coil.
Does this sould like where I should be looking?

What is the odds of getting a brand new BAD dist. it can from Auto Zone..

Thanks guys. I am to my ends...I would appricate any help.

Joe H. I might see if I can get you to come down one day and see if you can see what I am missing.

Had the same thing happen to me. I replaced all of the things you did except the distributor. Seems the pick up coil inside of the distributor was bad. Put a new one in and away I went(thanks to all who helped me!). You can check it with an ohmmeter, you just need to get your book out and find out which wires you need to check the resistance across. I think it is purple and orange. I had no resistance in mine!
Hope this helps you out!

sounds like the pickup coil in the dist and dont forget to set the air gap

you have to gap the magnet and pick up in the dist like a set of points or it wont fire i dont have my book here if you call napa and ask them what the air gap is they can tell ya

I replied to your other post - sure sounds like wiring to me. A remanufactured distributor "should" be set ok from the factory but check it first.

Have you tried a jumper wire to the coil?? Do you have a wiring diagram? Sounds like you may need it.

If you have a meter, or 12V test lamp (you can make one of these yourself, if you don't have one), check the positive side of the coil for voltage. It should be around 6 volts, or so, with the ignition switch in run, in start, it'll be around 12V.

You can check the pick-up coil in the same fashion, just use the negative side of the coil (the green wire). If the light flashes as the engine turns over, or your voltage fluctuates as the engine turns over, then the pick-up coil in the distributor is good.

I agree, it sounds like it's a wiring problem, but could also be corrosion in the distributor connector (a common place, since there's heat from the engine, and a ready source of moisture).

You might want to pull the connector back apart, and look to make sure that the engine side isn't a pretty green color. If it is, then clean it with rubbing alcohol, and a fine wire brush that you can get down into the pins with. If this won't do it, you'll have to remove the connector, and hardwire the distributor in.

Thanks guys for all of your help. I am almost sure it is a wiring problem now, last night I checked the voltage to the coil when I was cranking, it was only 9 volts. I guess that is not enough to get it to go over

My connections are very green. I will clean those today.

I guess the best thing will be a new harness. You would not believe that shape this one is in. Some PO's will do some crazy things..

If you happen to find a new under hood wiring harness at a good price, please email with where you got it! I could use one too, but dealer is "Oh my God" and I haven't talked myself into the Painless Wiring deal either. Thanks.

John, I'd be more than happy to come up and help you out. Ditch the Autozone dizzy and grab one at Carquest...they have an Auburn location, don't they? If not, and if you need one, I can pick one up and bring it to you. Maybe all you need is the pickup coil--easy fix that I learned the hard way (Christmas Eve, no less! I'll tell you about it some time).

When you go to the zone to drop off the dizzy, grab a new battery positive cable. When you get home, super-glue a penny to the top of the battery case. That will prevent corrosion from taking out your wires...believe it or not! Call me if you need help (334)322-8222.
