Approximately how long does it take the average Joe to rebuild a 2bbl Motorcraft carb for the first time? Any ideas? Any suggestions on doing this for the first time? I skimmed through the tech article, but it's hard for me to visualize since I'm not familiar with carb parts.

It took me about 6 hours from the start of the removal of the carb to the final carb nut going on (and this also included 2 trips to the auto parts store for some new fuel line and new manifold bolts).

I went real slow and cleaned everything real good. Make sure you have a good gasket remover/cleaner on hand and a polyester scrubby pad to remove all the old gaskets with. You will also need a couple of cans of carb cleaner and some lint free rags to remove all the built up varnish inside the carb.

Plan on another hour or two after the re-install to make adjustments.

well it depends....

you can use ths spray, or you can buy a carb dip and let it set over night. other than that, for your first time it will take a while like PhilSine said.

then again, some experts here can rebuild em in under 30 minutes.....

It took me about 5 or 6 hours, that was with having to undo a couple steps in the reassembly because I missed a step early on. I would definately recommend the carb dip to leave the parts overnight, but you may want to buy a can of spray as well as the main body of the carb is a little too big to fit in the cans. All in all, as long as you keep the parts straight upon disassembly and keep things clean, its a pretty straighforward process.

Good luck Tuck, I'll be doing the same this weekend but with a 4brl. Give us a update when your done. We'll see who has the least amount of trips to the parts store!
