I have an 84 J-10 longbed pick up with 33s on it and it wanders all over the road at highway speeds 60-70 mph, I had the front bearings replaced and the alignment done. The steering wheel has a super light touch I am thinking maybe a steering stabalizer, but was not sure if that would be a good idea? Any thoughts?

Most definetly you need a stabilizer. With a tire size like you have the tires tend to follow every line in the road. This is at least my experience. Some people may disagree with this but all I have to say to them is why do the late model Wags come stock with them? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif You may also need to adjust your steering box as well. Here is a link to how to adjust it. http://www.ifsja.org/tech/steering/boxadj.shtml

I have the same problem. I believe my PO replaced the PS pump with something else. I am not sure and my expert (great uncle) has not made an official diagnosis. There are kits to add a single stabilizer as well as double even triple stabilizers. A good stabilizer should be difficult to move by hand. The power assist will have no problem moving it though. I've read that the steering "lightness" is determined by a spring in the steering box. In some boxes this is changeable. Definite check out the link, although if your steering is very responsive, the adjustment may not show any difference as it tries to bring motion on the steering wheel in sync with tire motion. Let me know what you find out, and I'll certainly let it be know if I find anything.

On a different thread I got some info. and did some maintenance to the front steering (see steering wheel @ 2 o'clock). The components have changed little from year to year so I would guess you could use the adjustable mount plate from a later year. The full-size Jeeps in the bone yard all still seem to have the plates so my guess is a coupla bucks would get you one. I have used both the Rancho (current one) and the Skyjacker unit. I prefer the Skyjacker since it firmed up the steering more than the Rancho but really both work fine.
