Hello FSJers. I am new to the site, and also a new FSJ Jeep owner. I got a great deal on a '91 Grand Wagoneer. Yes, one of the last 1,506. The guy blew the tranny and sold it for a song. I've pulled Autos before, all with Fords, but I'm a little rusty. This morning I will find out how rusty.

So far: The tranny wouldn't do anything when I bought it. The fluid was a sick brownish color and the level was halfway up the stick. It made a strange swishing sound in neutral, which went away in drive and reverse. It won't go into gear at all in any of the xfer case settings. Both the 2wd/4wd vacuum switch and hi/lo lever seem to work, hi/N/Lo works only when in 4wd, is this normal? I'm guessing it is, Lo should be available only in 4wd. With the xfer case in neutral, I'm getting a small gear-type sound, I haven't checked the fluid yet. I tried draining it and swapping (most) of the fluid, and it's still a no go. My barely educated guess is that the torque converter isn't filling either because of the pump or some other reason. Time to drop it!

I found a tranny shop that would do a free teardown and inspection if I brough it in, with a great price on a rebuild, which it will definitely need. So what am I in for when dropping this out in my driveway? So far I'm planning to mark all connection points for re-assembly, rent a tranny jack, and start pulling bolts. What other things should I look for with the xfer case, tranny, drive shafts etc??

Thanks in advance!!!

Bill

hey welcome to tbe board. I didn't pull my own tranny when it went bad so I can't help you out. Most shops charge $150 RR the unit so, to me, it was worth it not to lay on my back for several hours.

Don't know how parts cost out there, but around here, when an A/T dies, it's better 90% of the time to find another from a salvage yard or another person for a couple hundred bucks than it is to rebuild the one you have. Just my opinion. Of course you want to take a good look at the one you would be buying before you bought it. Also, this would eliminate alot of down time that would normally be lost while the old tranny was being rebuilt.

In any regards, welcome to the board.
