Ok, 81 cherokee, 727, the 360 is out of a 77 something that was put in a 77 j10 honcho...the 360 ran but the th400 was screwed up... (no drive gear) any way, now that the 360 is in the cher, i cant get it to go more than 10 or 15 mph in any gear w/out stalling the engine! It revs up fine in park and neutral, just wont go fast in forward or reverse gears! The fluid in the tranny was low about a quart, i filled it and that helped,(it didn't move at all when i first started the motor after the transplant), the fluid is not burnt, nor did i overfill it. There was/is no leaking of atf on/around the tranny or t-case,( other than normal for a jeep!), and the flex plate bolted right up to the convertor. I know its a lock up because it says so on a sticker right on the thing. HELP!

I have never heard of a lock up on our rigs but I could be completly and totally wrong but if Im not that could be a problem in itself???
Another question would be did you take out the centering race that was in the crank before you swapped the motor over? If not your tranny pump is trashed and you will need to have the tranny rebuilt. This is a common mistake but a costly one.

If I am not mistaken...the lock-up converter was only available on the 999 tranny. Which is what was used in the CJ7 and maybe the CJ5(not sure). I had a 83 CJ7 that I put a 360 into with the Edelbrock performer package and had the 999 rebuilt to include a new front pump and a 5-clutch pack versus the factory 3-clutch pack. Man this thing was practically bullet-proof http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
The Tranny cost me about $800 but it was money well spent. The guy that built it told me it would hold up to the baddest V-8 I could put in front of it. I gotta say...I sure tested his theory!! and never had any problems at all....man I wish I had kept that CJ http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

General Rule : DO NOT PUT A LOCK-UP TORQUE CONVERTER IN A NON LOCK-UP TRANSMISSION!!!
Sorry for the yelling.. but the TC wont even engage the pump. It'll bolt right in, but it wont do a darn thing for ya!

like i said, ther'e a sticker right on the convertor that says" lock-up convertor"! i dont know if its stock, the P O grenaded the motor, a 2 bbl 360, and i bought the vehicle in nonrunning condition for 150.00! the motor i swapped in , ran in the j10 i pulled it from, i did nothing to it except change valve covers and bolt the 727 flexplate on it. No other mods were made to the drive train! this sucks!!!!!What the hell is a centering race!?

Some people call it a pilot bearing. If your motor came from a truck with a TH400 it had the bearing in there. It sits right in the end of the crank. If you left it in it would have made putting the converter from a 727 hard.

I'm not confident about this but I believe that there was both a lockup and non-lockup version of the 727 used in the GW's. If it had the tow package, It came with a non-lockup tranny and a higher ratio in the rear end. However, if it did not have the tow package, it did have the lockup tranny.

it had the 2 core radiator...so no tow package...making it a lock up convertored tranny! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif I guess I'll pull the frikkin motor back out and check for that bearing. the motor is a 77, so it was on a th400 or a manual, but not a 727. I didn't notice any bearing when i swapped flexplates. It did bolt right up to the tranny, bell housing-block and tc-flexplate, no problems. Just this morning, I jacked the rearend off the ground, started it and put it in drive, and accelerated up to 55 mph indicated, the tires were a spinnin! I then put it in park, let 'er down to terra firma, and put it in drive, 5 mph...stalled after ten feet of movement! I swear i'll never buy a nonrunning vehicle from anybody ever again! just not fun anymore! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif At least i'm not out any more than $700.00...YET!
