View Full Version : J10 & GW Rear Brakes

While looking up some brake parts, I noticed that the GW shows 11" X 2" rear shoes and drums, but the J10 shows both 11" x 2" and 12" x 2 1\2" rear shoes and drums. Aren't the rear axles the same? Was the 12" brake a heavy duty option for the J10? Just another question in my never ending quest for better brakes.

The other guys will correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 12 inchers are for the 8 lug dana 60 J20's

I wondered about that, but it showed up as a J10 option. Anybody got a Factory Shop Manual to see if they showed it?

I'm guessing I have 12 inch drums on the back of my J10. I bought brakes for for the J10 and they were way to small. I figured they were the small ones. I had to go to NAPA to get them as a few other shops didn't show up in the computer. I don't know, maybe it was an option or something. My wag has smaller drums, can tell just by looking.

Unless I'm not doing my math correctly, wouldn't the 12" option work out to something in the order or 73% larger brake area? It would be a significant brake improvment

The 74-83 factory TSM's show the 11x2 brakes for the J-10's and the 12x2.5,s on the J-20's.
