For those of you still giving me advice (I know this getting kind of old) I read somewhere that bolts comming lose somewhere will hit and cause a terrible knocking and cracking..so before I tear into my engine I wanted to check this out. Is this true or am I just thinking wishfully. I cant seem to find where I read this...any info? If not I will look ant the rods and bearings

No problem, I am hopeing it is not a rod as well. The only bolts that would give a rythmatic sound on would be Flywheel bolts comeing loose, if no recent clutch work has been done this is highly unlikely after 20 years of staying tight. Next would be presure plate bolts and again the above applies if no clutch work has been performed. Starter, if a starter has been changed a wrong bolt could be in there to long hitting the flywheel, wrong starter put it hitting flywheel, back to the clutch bad release bearing could clunk and knock and screech if wore out, this sound should change or disapear when clutch is depressed. I would check alternater, water pump and power steering for broken mounting bolts. Idle engine place hand on each of these if you feel a vibration that keeps tempo to the noise you here remove the belt that drives that pariticular unit then start up and see if noise is gone. Please be sure you keep your hands clear of belts. purchase a stethescope they work, use it to pinpoint the stongest sound source LOW, HIGH, MIDDLE, FRONT, BACK. The reason I felt it was a more serious problem since you have already had colapsed lifter and a push rod out. Good luck. ;)
