Gdye, I have had an '82 Chero 360,727 etc for the past 2 1/2 years and have gone through 4 ignition coils to date. They all appear to crack (due to heat), is this common with these? Coil is mounted in original position above motor, is it worthwhile considering remote mounting or are there other possible causes? Motor runs on dual fuel i.e.hi-oct unleaded / LPG (propane)- mainly on the propane @ $Aus-45c per litre.

It sounds like you are running 12v thru a coil that needs a ballast resistor. Check the voltage on the positive side of the coil, if it is 12v then you either have to get a coil that does not require a bassast res. or a ballast res. and a new coil. It is not common to have that kind of failure if the voltage is right. If there is a res. then the voltage will be about 9v when running and 12v when cranking.

JeepBob is correct...Ballast resistor is missing.....I went through 3 coils last year.....then I reinstalles the resistor and voila! fixed
