View Full Version : It's not Lifter noise....so what is it?

I have what I thought when I bought the Jeep was Lifter noise. Almost every older Jeep I have seen seems to have this before a rebuild so I wasn't too concerned. Well here is the bad part. I was checking everything over before replacing the rear main seal, and while under the Jeep while running I realized that the "ticking" noise was not coming from the top up by the lifters. It is coming from the right lower rear area of the motor? almost all the way back. It follows the rpm range for speed. Any ideas?

DM,have you pulled the oil pan yet?If not I would get some Plastigauge and check the rod bearing clearance[#'s 6 and 7 seem to go south first]. Marc

Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak. The gaskets like to blow out on the passenger side manifold in the rear. An exhaust leak will make a "ticking" sound as well.

Thanks porkchop, I hope it is an exhaust leak and not INTERNAL

It could also be a loose torque convertor or cracked flywheel.

Probably the exhaust. Mine seems to like to leak at the air injection tubes. It makes quite the racket especially when accelerating. Kind of a b---h to fix actually. Those tubes cost a pretty penny also. I think that I will eventually lose them altogether. I am willing to bet that this is your problem--either at the tube or where the manifold mates to the Y-pipe.

are you guys saying all lifter/valve/pushrod noise would be heard from the top of the moter and exhaust/rod bearing noise would be heard on the bottom, I have some noise but really only hear it around the spark plug(I've never been under it listening and absolutely no sound from valve cover)
what would that most likely be? any ideas..
thanks

One way to tell where the noise is coming from is to start the wag and get yourself a wood broom handle and then place it on different spots on the engine and then the other end to your ear. You will be amazed at what you hear :D .

I learned the broom handel trick in shop class works great. I'm taking one along when i go look at a Jeep next weekend.

OK, I'll bite, what is the broom handle trick?
you put the one end of the broom handle in your ear and the other end to the suspected location of the rattle... It amplifys the sound, helps to locate the exact area of the rattle , also known as an "IFSJ stethoscope"

Okay guys maybe you can tell me what my ticking is. It does not tick at idle...sounds strong. In park is I rev it sounds strong. But when I drive it ticks. Not ping...I know what that is. It ticks. Sounds like valves but I am not sure because it does not do it at idle....my '79 does that I know that sound. Could that be an exhaust leak. It is on the passenger side. Around #8 cylinder, or at least I think it is there.

A general rule-of-thumb:
* If the tick increases under load (i.e. under acceleration, but disappears or diminishes at idle or when coasting), it's likely an exhaust leak.
* If the tick is as noisy under load as no load, it's likely valvetrain noise.

Gott another question for you Bob. If it does not do it when idling. Which is my case....what is the best way to find the leak???? I cannot hear it....put tubes in my ears and the broom handle thing.

I had what sounds like this problem. Drove me mad! turned out to be a loose bolt on the touque converter attaching the ring gear flywheel thing. I use a bolt in 3/8 tubing to find noises.
