Grrr...

Ok, it's a List 1850-2 4-bbl. When I start it up, or attempt to, THe whole F#$%in thing floods over. I mean the gas darn near squirts out the Atmosphere vent.

I think the needle valve in the bowl is stuck, but I can't figure out how to adjust it, and my 2 Holley books don't have this list# in them.

TIA.

Maybe take the needle and seat assembly apart and make sure nothings in there. The same thing happened to my 67 tempest and it turned out there was a little bit of chrome from the braided fuel line in there that wasn't allowing the needle to seat and flooding it. If that's not the case, I think the 1850 adjusts the same as my 4 barrels. There is an adjustment nut on the top of the bowl. loosen the set screw with a standard screw driver and then adjust the nut below with I think a 5/8"? wrench, could be 11/16?. when you're done, tighten the set screw again. If all that still don't fix it, maybe your float isn't floating or needs adjustment.
Hope this helps

What time are you heading to SJ, Ken? I'll be available from 7am to about 1ish, probably(when the GF gets home from work).

I was going to swap the carb over to avert this whole mess, but 1- the PO GLUED this sucker on the adapter plate and I can't remove it, and 2-I have no gasket for between the carb and the adapter, nor the adapter and the manifold.

Basically, I'm up S$%T creek here. No money, no gaskets, no nothing.

It may have to wait till I get some dough.

Lemme know Ken. (I actually live in Los Gatos, but SJ is a bit more known for all the out-of-towners).

Unless there is a 7 diget number or an number like C834-1234-EE (just an example of a ford pn)your holley books should cover it any how. The needle and seat would be adjusted by loosening the screw and turning the nut like Joe said. If you have one othe carbs with the above numbers above the list # then it is either a GM or a Ford Holley with non adj needle and seats. On those you ben the Tab on the floats to adjust.

I know the 1850 is a 4160 series carb. Will this help you find your adjustment procedure in your manual? I hope so.

In the last hour of reading, I finally discerned from the list# that it was a 4160 series carb.

It appears that my mistake was in adjusting the needle valve like Jeepbob said...According to the books, the screw should be tight and used to set the height of the float...not adjusting the screw for float height.

If that makers sense...if not, Ken will straighten me out tomorrow afternoon.

Hopefully I can get the bowl to seal up after removing the POs crappy "glue all over the f-in place" rebuild job.

I really hope someone can help me.

I have the float set, finally, so it doesn't gush gas everywhere. But now, when I go to start it, I can't hardly get it to run. When it runs, it makes a loud sucking noise through the carb, and giving it gas only makes it louder and kills it.

TOo much gas? or not enough?

does it sound like alot of air rushing into the engine??

i suspect vac leak.

check gaskets around the carb and if the adaptor might be warped preventing a good seal against the mani.

Hope I didn't miss you Sat, if you were coming down for reals. Had to work all day Sat. Next weekend I should be around.

Forgot to mention, I just rebuilt the carb on my '64; a Holley 2300 2bbl. I think the sucking sound is too much gas. I adjusted the mixture screws from lean to rich and as soom as i passed the highest rpm and smoothest idle I could get, turning it more to the rich side made the sucking sound and the rpm dropped off. Hope I'm right.
