alright, I have found a T5 & NP208 bolted behind a 258 in an 83 Cherokee FSJ

I was wondering what the durability of this setup is? What is good/bad about it? If people are swapping these OUT, what are they swapping in?

When things go, what goes? I want to swap an 88 360 from a GW into a YJ wrangler, and run a 5 speed with Driver side drop

Does anyone run engine/trans/transfer config. now? Anyone know what kinda power can be run in front of the T5? I know that they use them in mustangs and camero/firebirds, so that should say something.

So, is there something inherently wrong with the Jeep case I should know about, or is it possible to convert the camero T5 over to avoid problems?

I just like the idea of having everything bolt together and not have to spend major $$$ on adapter crap.

Any input on this setup will be helpful.

The T-5 is the weak link. It's a light duty trans and won't hold up behind a V-8. They're marginal with a 258. The T-5's were only put in 82/83 FSJ's with the 258/2.73 gears combo. There's a lot of dead T-5's out there from 80's era CJ's that folks swapped 350's into.

Good idea on not spending money on the adapters. The NP208 is definately up to snuff. I think its one of the strongest part time chain driven transfer cases around. Their also underneath fullsize Broncos. As for for the t-5, I don't know I never researched it when I found a T-18a.

only thing i can think of that would be close and require no adapters would be an ax15 and 231. the ax15 is the strongest of the yj trannies, but still prolly marginal behind the 360. the 208 will bolt on in place of a 231 if youd rather use that, but there is alot of cool stuff for the 231(4 to 1 low range,2low shifter, fixed yoke kits, etc.)

the gm nv4500 will prolly have a gm version 208,but youll have to run it cause its got a 32 spline input.the drop is pass side so youll have to swap axles,or adapt it to a different xfer. either way youll need to adapt it to the engine.

the dodge nv4500 will have the circular pattern and 23 spline out th lwt you use a 231 or 208 without adapters. you may have to adapt it to the engine,or use a chrysler 360(tho i dont want to start that ball rollin again http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif ) some clutch mods may be needed as well.

if it were me-well,i wouldnt use an amc 360,but if i did http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif id swap out the d30 and d35 and swap in a pair of 44s with a pass side front drop. now you can trac down a cj version of the t18(very short belhousing) and bolt that right to your 360,and use its matching d20 xfer case. you will have to buy a mounting bracket for a slave cyl and use the correct pressure plate to make the stock hydraulic clutch stuff work,or use cj mechanical linkage.

ur thots?

Well, here is what is going to happen with my YJ:

Have D44 Front & Rear (with flat top knuckles) Has driver's side drop.

Have an AX5, with the 4 banger.

Have the AMC 360 already.

I am still trying to find out is
1: can the camero T5 be used (with the adapters)
2: what breaks on the T5?
3: Is there anything that just slides between the 360 and the NP208 (what shares the same spline counts).

I would like to have 5 speed, so I could still drive at 60 without going too high in RPMs.

4 speeds are a possibility.

Any more info?

Just to clear up the above. I was just in the 82/83 TSM's and the T-5's were also used with the 3.31 axle gears and not just the 2.73's at stated. Sorry bout dat.

T-176, T-18, are two that will slide in between that setup. I can only think of these right off the top of my head. The T-176 I guess should be a bolt in if came out of a SJ. A T-18 would have to be found in a mid 80s j-truck with the same transfer case hooked up to it, because of the adapter that is on it.

you cannot slide a t18 from an 80 or up j20 between those 2. you will have to use the 208 that comes with the t18. it shares the FORD 31 spine input(make mental note of that,it may come in handy later http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif )

further, you would prolly not want to use that version in a yj.its a mighty long package. even if you swapped the input shaft and belhousing for cj pieces, the adapter btween the tranny and xfer is bout 8 inches long. you would almost have to connect the xfer output directly to the rear end!
