Has anyone found a way to remove the lockplate from a 89 GW without the special tool identified in Haynes. If not can you rent one. Hate to buy it for one time use.

I think he means the lock plate in the steering column. Once the steering wheel is pulled, it's the next thing to be removed. Without the tool, it'll come off alot easier than it goes back on. There's a spring under that keeps tension on it. The tool is only $15-$20. I bought mine instead of renting it.

Buy or rent the tool. That plate is easy to remove and REAL HARD to install without the tool. I mean, darn near impossible. I've seen it done. Sad sight. Two good mechanics swearing and sweating for about 30 minutes with a couple of big screwdrivers.

Rent or buy the tool! It took me and my friend over an hour on his CJ-7. That is a pain I won't want to give to my worst enemy.

Well worth the price of the tool! It will work on MANY other vehicles too, and who knows when you may need it again.

Don't wait until you're ready to reinstall it before you get the tool. It's possible to get the plate off without it, but putting it on is another story...

Autozone will loan you one for free, or sell you one for like $10. It's a lot cheaper than the deductible for an emergency room visit...
