After about 6 months I finally got my leaking exhaust manifold fixed. I still have a small leak coming from one of the smog bolts(that I broke off and have not fixed yet, just plugged)that I will get to it as soon as I can. Is it just me or will big leaks like that rob the engine of power. It seems to drive much stronger than before. Maybe I am just excited. I now really see the benifits of the TFI. Now I need to take it to the muffler shop and get the old clogged cat removed....One thing good about Alabama..no smog stuff required.. :D

Shadowfax, you may want to get a dummy catalytic put on...I know around here there is no emissions testing, but they visually check for the cat. I had the muffler guy make me an empty cat with a piece of straight pipe thru it, he would not install it but that's no big deal...
Shadow, exhaust leaks will rob some power, but they typically have to be relatively large. If you can hear it promenently it is causing some loss.
As far as the cat you can remove it and just add a short straight pipe. I removed my rattling cat on my ZJ and just replaced it with pipe....pending Langdons response.
Langdon, who visually checks? I have been running mine without for about 4 years and since we have no testing I thought it ok.

Well it was so loud that it would bother me when I would drive down the road. So I guess that could cause some power loss. Yesterday afternoon I decided to look for the cat and see how hard it would be to do it my self and to my suprise I did not see one. I guess the PO had alrady removed it. I also noticed that I have a 3 inch pipe. I just never stopped to look until yesterday.
Also yesterday it drove the best it ever had, more power and everything. Last night I got in it to go somewhere and the tranny nows has a slippage problem.
One one thing is fixed it just moves to another. I guess it never ends. So now I can not even drive my quite 360 :( :( :(

That is a 'by the book' inspection here. Depending on the shop, they can let it slide. The place I go is strict (failed me for a quarter-sized hole in the floorboard), so I put on the dummy cat...

If your '86 runs an EGR valve, the exhaust leak robs the system of its back pressure and the EGR valve won't work right. Believe it or not, it does make a driveability improvement. Getting that last leak fixed will button up the system and it WILL run better.
