I just got the spark knock kit from Jeep out of Milwalkee. Decided to take a photo of it before I installed it so all could see the information on the top. Note the GM label. Can anyone tell me the particulars about what makes this valve different from OEM?

The Jeep part number is J3239372 (EGR) J3221283 (Gasket) or Spark Knock Kit P/N 83100071. I just installed it and set the timing. After I set the idle and etc. I'll know whether it does any good.

A trip to Michigan from Atlanta ought to test it out. Think I'll take the OEM with me just in case I have troubles with it.

I just ordered these parts from the local D*dge dealer yesterday and am waiting for them to call. Can I ask how much they whacked you for them? All told, mine will be about $155.oo for all the parts listed on the Tech section of the website. My timing's so retarded that there's no 'get up and go' in my attempt to battle the dreaded ping.

Still, it's a needed upgrade. This vehicle's a keeper...

Hey Guys, I've been battling a spark knock on my '91 GW myself and have just decided to check out the EGR valve. With 103k miles I'd say it's a good idea to repalce anyway. Can someone tell me if the "upgrade" was successful when they used it. I'm anticipating pulling a rather heavy trailer for 3000 miles soon and I need to get this thing dialed in. Also, is more envolved in this upgrade than an EGR "swap"?

On an unrelated subject, how much does a GW weigh? Any idea?

I checked two dealers, One was $72 the other was $69, I paid $69. The EPA decal should not be needed unless you are a dealer or you live in California, that would have been an extra $6. All of the remaining kits were sent to Milwalkee and are being distributed from there.

If you pay much more than that, they are taking you for a ride!!! Let them know that they are twice the price others are paying, and the guy behind the counter is not the one to talk to about the $$$.

I paid $69 as well (didn't come with a sticker either but the parts counter guy said it wouldn't say what was done, just that a mod had been made.)

Totally took care of my problem. I still run 92 octane, but did before the upgrade as well and all that rig did was ping.

I called my Jeep dealer. $155 for the part number you mentioned. I also found out that the upgrade you mentioned was for '85 thru '89. Not having any luck finding a non OEM supplier for my '91 EGR though. Any suggestions?

Greg, It seems to be working, but I have not had it on the road long enough to decide. (need some mountains to climb)Also, I just replaced my radiator, water pump, total flush, and hoses. This helps just by the vertu of doing so. The vacuum delay to the EGR is taken out and an 8th inch connector installed in its place as well as the delay to the distributor. Set the timing at 8 degrees BTDC, adjust idles.

There are actually several different "things" or "combinations of things" that can influence spark knock or ping. I'm sure by reading all of the posts on the subject, that everyone has found that out. Troubleshoot the logical influences first then get to the meaty ones, making sure all of the CTO's work, vacuum lines are all good, use good gas, no restrictions in the exhaust system, the air injection system is working correctly including the check valves. Make sure that you do not a carbon deposits as well. Some mechanics trickle water into the carb., I prefer transmission fluid. These are old tricks and sometimes they work, but be careful doing so.
I've gone through all of these systems, and it's a must if you want the vehicle to run correctly and provide a reasonably lengthy duration of use. By the way, it's a good learning experience, just don't let it drive you nuts.
