Or in my case not shift into third? I am tired of playing with it and I am about to bring it in and get it looked at. I have never brought the wag in for any reason. I have always been able to fix it myself, but not this time :( .
The vacuum modulator is working fine. The shift linkage is correct. Has plenty of fluid. Governer seems to be working ok. I try to get it up to higher speeds to see if it is just shifting late, but I can't because you can start to smell it burning. This is my way back and forth to work. I have been using the wife's car for a month and she has been stuck here. She is going to lose her mind soon and so am I.
HELP!!!!

If you are smelling it burn, I would guess it is the clutches gone. That is not good as I would guess it would need rebuild. Sorry to say. I do not know enough about auto trans to work on them internaly I hear they are easy, but I have an abundance of them so I just swap them out when they do not perform the way they should. :(

It sounds like the 2nd to 3rd valve is stuck or the rear rear servo is bound up. I would suspect the 2-3 valve or a check ball is in the wrong spot. The FSM has a good pix of where the balls go but my scanner is broke so maybe some one else can help.

Just a dumb question, but how could a check ball get in the wrong spot?

It just got rebuilt. I didn't touch the valve body at all. I think I will pull it and clean it all up. As for the check balls, I would love to get my hands on a diagram to show the proper location for them. That might be a possiblity as it was late when they went in and then I pushed one of them down to far and had to blow it out with the compressor (sorry, Mike :D ).

As the valve body must come off to rebuild the T400 and the balls are removed it is possible to 1. get a small particle of dirt in the body which could jam up the 2-3 valve, and 2. put a check ball in the wrong hole which could block fluid flow to the needed passage for 2 to 3 upshift.
The check balls could not move to the wrong spot without removal of the valve body.
BTW also check the valve body gaskets for proper installation.
