I finally received my lein sale paperwork and the wife is going to do battle with the DMV tomorrow. So I need to get this project started again.

The glasspak on my beast is shot, almost looks literally shot (little tiny holes all over where it rusted through). I've read the exhaust posts in the past but they all seem to concentrate on the 8 bangers. Not going to hot rod it and I don't want to wake the neighbors. Any ideas, size, muffler type, JCW brand, etc.????

Thanks,

P.J.

Cool...hope all the DMV stuff works out!

As for exhaust, yep, much of the talk is for V8s, but then, that's in a lot of areas...us inline lovers get honorable mention most the time.

I've done a complete exhaust(from manifold back) on the '77 J10 and have priced a complete exhaust for my '78 J10. Both are long boxes with 258s, but the '77 had a 3 speed and the '78 a 4 speed, so the first exhaust pipe is different, making the whole thing basically best to just do it all new. Anyway....paid like $110 for my 3 pieces(exhaust pipe, muffler, tailpipe) for the '77 J10 about 4 years ago. Got a price of about $120 for the same pieces for the '78 J10 last year(from same place). I do the remove/install on it this way. Checked with a guy up in Superior who was recommended for exhaust work last summer and he gave me a price of custom first(bent) for the same stuff at $140, and that included him doing the work(barring no nasty bolts to remove). For the extra $20, the custom job didn't sound bad, but I'll probably still do it myself.

I checked prices in about 3 places BEFORE going with my '77 exhaust in '97. Two local parts stores were closer to $200+ for the same stuff. A "Farm and Fleet" store was the place where I got it for $110! Same price differences for my '78....higher at the parts stores than the Farm store! smile.gif Thus, you know where I'll be looking for exhaust parts if need be! Not sure if you've got such a thing out there, but check around....you might find some big differences in prices! The 258 exhausts are a LOT cheaper(generally) than the 360s, which is nice for us! Since you shouldn't have a catty on that(you don't, right?), that should keep the price down too. The approx. $120 range, or $100-150 would sound reasonable to me for this type of thing.

Well....wish ya well....especially with the DMV! Take care...

Wife goes in today to battle the DMV, man I hope things go well.

As I probably told you before, I am a Cheesehead by birth and my favorite store back in WI is Fleet Farm (AKA The Man's Mall). You can buy anything there and they have a great selection of exhaust systems or even just misc pieces to custom fab your own.
Out here in SoCal. you ask someone where you can buy an exhaust system and they say Midas. What about the do-it-yourselfer I say. If things fo well at the DMV I think I'll drive it by a muffler shop that's on my way home from the train station and get a quote. Since my pipes are actually in pretty great shape, if the price comes in too high I might just cut in a new muffler for now.

Thanks,
