Alright, went investigating for unknown gas leak today (see post "when It rains it pours..") and found to my surprise that the tank was not leaking...yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However when I checked my Fuel sending unit on the top of the tank I found a puddle of gas and air bubbles coming from the rear nipple............

It seems the nipple where the fuel line attaches is rusted and has a crack in it that allows gas to seep out and pool until the dumps onto the driveway looking like a tank leak.........

Have ordered the unit ($58) and ring and am reading up on removal and replacement.....

Do I have to remove the gas tank or can I just pull the Fuel sending unit out from the top of the tank through the circular access panel under the back seat?????

Thanks in advance..............

(OK upon further review I found the article by Greg Tellone and answered my question..........any further comment or experience is still very helpful...thanks again..ps this is the edited part, now Rocky watch me pull this rabbit out of my hat)

Stay tuned for our next exciting post entitled........"It was easier then I thought" or "Don't light that match her....."

good news, bigbry. the fuel sender can be replaced w/o removing the tank. make a few scratch marks for reference and becareful with the float arm. the hardest part of the job is loosening the nut that holds the thing on, its about a 3 1/2- 4" hex. i think i used a blunt drift and a hammer to loosen it. its funny how often i end up using a hammer on the wag. good luck!!

You can replace it form the top. It took me about 10 minutes to replace mine a couple of weeks back. I used a pair of channel locks to get the big hex nut loose. If you get the same sending unit I did you will notice that the float does not fall as fast as the original one does. If you move the float to that top and leave it with the unit held verticaly you can see it fall very ssssllllooowwwwwlllllyyyy. Once installed it works fine. Good luck.

speaking of fuel tank issues......my rubber hose from my filler to my tank leaks .....and also the vent line to the filler leaks.....does anyone know the ID of these?......I do not want to take them off until I have replacements, so if anyone can measure the inside diameter that would be great!

Success!!!!!!!!!!
Picked up the Fuel sending unit today and had it installed in 15 minutes....had to use hammer and screw driver to loosen nut....the niopples were rusted through...yikes..now onto the rear window (those parts came in today as well)
