I am replacing the valve covers this weekend. I have a second set powder-coated and used permex to seal the gaskets to them. Any thing else I should do while I have the valve covers off?

Was the gasket a cork gasket? If so, putting permatex on both sides is not good- the purpose of the cork is to soak with oil and swell to seal better. You can use some on the cover side to help hold it in place though. The biggest precaution is DO NOT overtighten the covers. It will warp them and they'll always leak. Good luck.

The torque spec. on the valve cover bolts (V8) is 50 inch-pounds, hope it helps,

   INCH-lbs???

No wonder I'm using a quart every ten miles...

;)

Make sure your drain-holes are clean; if you do have to unclog them, change the oil soon afterwards.

How do you convert inch-pounds to foot-pounds.

1 ft. lb = 12 in. lb.

Ya didn't catch the winkie, did ya?

I snug mine down to finger tight, plus about another 1/3-turn with a small ratchet (to take up any slack), then back off and tighten it again the same way.
