during my recent exhaust repair, i notice that the t/c is wet and that the rtv sealant is peeling away. time to check the atf level. i tried a 1 1/4, too big, then 1 1/8,too small. no problem i,ll get a 1 3/16 @a-zone when im there. wrong, no 1 3/16 offered. went to lowes,no dice. they did have a 30mm. 32mm =1 1/4. tried it, fits snug. must be another metricated part like the p/s pump.any way, back to the 229. its original from the factory with rtv instead of a gasket? Have i been POed yet again? with 130k whats the likelihood the chain is is worn? can i replace the chain just by splitting the t/c?. TIA

Andy, you're a better man than I, I used my channel locks. As for the RTV, mine has a gasket.
I hope that helps.

The two halves are put together with a sealant not a gasket. I have the goop # out in my shed. Can get it if you need it. The one that the book calls for isn't availible but I got the next best thing and it hasn't leaked yet.
Use a Cresent wrench on the plug. A big one.
You can change the chain by removing the back half. Remove the rear drive shaft, speedo cable and bolts to seperate the case. I would check the chain for slack first to see if it needs to be replaced. That means that the fluid will have to be drained which is a good idea anyway if you havn't changed it yet.
Ok I went and checked on the goop. It's Locktight Gasket Maker #518. The book calls for a different Locktight # that doesn't exist but after some research that's the one I came up with.

Bob . . does that mean I was DAPO'd again? Mine has a fiber gasket (big thick blue sucker). I would assume he did that the same time he put gear oil in the T-case instead of ATF.
Thanks,
Phil

Dave...sounds like it cuz the TO says to use this gasket maker. If there was GO in it theres no telling what else went on in there.
Example: My mode and range forks were put in backwards by someone other than me. Could have been the PO or there best mechanic, who knows but I fixed it.

From what I've heard...I mean read, you don't wanna split the case unless it is vertical. There's a gazillion little needle bearings that'll fall out if ya just lay it on the table. Good luck!

Kimbrough is right. There are a ton of needle bearings in there and you don't want to crack it open unless you have a good parts drawing.

I can testify about the needle bearings!! I slpit my case apart last night to find a busted shift sprocket and the needle bearings went everywhere. Does anyone know where to get a schematic drawing of the 229 case exploded w/ part numbers? I need to order a new gear if I cant find another case today(going to check on a 208 & longer driveshaft).
Chris
(BTW, I got the 208f out of a early '80s ford and it has about a 3 1/2" wider spacing between the front and rear outputs and the wrong spline count)

ooh boy, iwas hoping to drop the shaft, and speedo cable and then to remove the back cvr. is this doable or will needle bearings fall every where?. i have another 229, but i guess an exploded diagram would be good too thanks for the locktite p/n. for now im gonna just get the fill and drain plugs open with my 8$ socket  (my 53 ford only cost me 5$) ill check the chain slack. then refill the t/c and procrastinate a while. its not giving me noise or trouble, its just the mileage and the horror stories about what happens if the chain breaks.thanks every one
