View Full Version : Will 208 swap into place of a 229 Tcase?
Would this be a desirable swap? Is the 208 case a gear or chain drive?
I get the difference between the two from my other post; I would think a part time case would be more desirable from a gas milage standpoint. I have a line on one for a good price.
A hole would have to be cut for the shifter; that isn't a problem. Would it get rid of the vacuum stuff on that the 229 uses? Or does the 208 also have some vacuum actuated functions?
Thanks

It is a direct swap, only thing is you will need the rear driveshaft from the rig it is pulled from if the rig is the same as yours, J10 to J10 or Grand Wag To Grand Wag. There are no Vac functions on the 208. Do not be surprised at no increase in mileage. I have owned both part time and fultime. No noticeable differance.
OK, a search turned up a lot of info; next time I'll try that first.
One thing that seems to come up is folks say you can't drive in four wheel drive on pavement anymore. Why not? What's wrong with shifting into 4 HI and locking the hubs in?

You can not be in 4 wheel drive with a part time case on high traction surfaces, because there is no provision for the Part time case to release windup, when one axle turns faster than the other, as would happen turning corners, uneven tire size, ect. In a fulltime case the front and rear outputs on the T-Case are clutched one way or another and keep the driveline from binding up. On a Part time the front and rear outputs are driven with no clutch between them to release windup.
You can in a full-time system but not with a part time(D20, D300, 208 etc). The part-time 4WD mode locks the front/rear diff together so you need to be on a slippery surface so a tire can spin occasionally to relieve the binding. Same principle as in 4LO on your 229. It locks out the viscous coupler in the tcase and you can't drive on non-slick surfaces anymore either.
I agree with C_J doing the 208/229 swap won't gain you any mileage. I think the 208 is a tougher tcase and no expensive VC involved and "to me" is more desirable but if I had a 229 I'd just find a 208 and needed swap parts and store them and continue driving the 229 till it went south and then do the swap.
If you do swap to a 208 and you have an 83/84 wag you'll need to keep the dash vac switch to control the vacuum front axle.
