theres a larger background story to this all, but ill post that when i have time to write that novel..but heres whats relevent:

-the blower motor works.
-if the controls are changed by a person in the car, someone under the hood can witness the cable in operation.
-after bringing it to a "shop" (i use the term loosely), the vacuum was switched up, and the defrost, heat, and heat/defrost were all working, but it wouldnt idle, and ran like garbage. now its back to the way it was originally.

as far as the quadtrack..

-there seems to be no vacuum there. switching from 2wd to 4wd yeilds no result.

is all this a product of the vacuum motor (from what i understand is that ball like thing, by the right pedal) going bad, or being disconnected inadvertantly, or is it a completely different problem?

This is from memory and without looking at the Jeep, but I figure its' better than nothing. The heater vacuum and the transfer case vacuum come from the same general area from the vacuum canister on the firewall. I think the heater vacuum is a single black line that goes through the firewall about a foot to the left of the master cylinder. Where it goes from there I don't know. The vacuum for the transfer case also comes from this area and has three vacuum lines going through the firewall. I think it is red for the main vacuum which goes to the switch on the dash. Then it is either yellow or green for the 2wd or 4wd. These two go through the firewall, attach to metal tubes, then become plastic tubes again at the vacuum shift motor. The shift motor is just in front of the transfer case and obviously has two vacuum hose attached to it. Hopefully this at least gets you going. Just start from the vacuum source and work your way down.

You've got a vac leak somewhere in the lines or the reservoir. It's possible in road salt areas I suppose the vac motor on the tcase could be rusted out w/hole in it but I'd look for a line/reservoir leak.

id tend to lean towards rusting out the vac motor, but it has only been in minnesota a few years, and for the most part, parked in a driveway. a texas rig for most her life.

you also have 2 vaccum reservoir.. one for cruise and 1 for heater/4 wd... but i would go for a bad vaccum reservoir.. the round ball... or a frayed hose... you can cut the hose at the nipple... usually the hose hardened and do not seal well.....
if it ran like #$% then, seems like a vaccum leak.... you need to find it... connecting a vaccum gauge is a good way to trace your vaccum line.... and is a must investment....

I bypassed the vac reservoirs by attaching the black heater vac line and the red 4wd vac line togther at a "T" and then attaching that to a direct vac line off the intake. If you still have neither heater nor 4wd it's either in the vac motor on transfer case or in the lines under the dash.
