I just purchased a 91 GW with a seized 5.9L. I understand that I can replace it with a AMC 401 or another 360. What I really want is a FI motor TB at minimum preferably MFI. What other options are there? Is there any easy conversion using an adapter from AA that doesn't require changing Trans/TC? If I stick with another 360 I can get a TB conversion kit but would want to change the CAM to something with a little more TQ and HP. Does anyone know of a good CAM for the AMC 360? Possibly 210HP, 325TQ. Any help would be greatly appreciated? TIA

I found out my enging has over 200k on the clock, so I'm contemplating a similar transplant. I'm presently looking into a Chevy 350 with a 400 tranny setup. The only problem is I really want overdrive. The easiest way I've found to get there from here is a Ford 351 with the AOD tranny, no computer required. From what I've read, the AOD was used with a transfer case for awhile so I'm considering that as well. Checking into the cost factor, I can get a used Chevy 350 or Ford 351 and rebuild it myself for about the same money as the AMC rebuild and then have the ability to actually get parts without having to order everything.
I still haven't made up my mind. The original engine still runs, but the cam bearings are going. I know from experience that when things get that far, everything is close behind.
Good Luck,
Greg

You could get a 350 with a th-400 that will mate to it but then you have to look at moving the motor mounts and probably the tranny mount. You could get the fi kit for a 360 and leave your set up like it is. This would keep from having other electrical headaches. Will having the motor rebuilt you could have it bored and blueprinted. Put a different cam in and possibly upgrade the ignition. There are a few recent posts on the different cams you can use.

Hey McBain, I recently requested info on the new Xtreme grind cams from comp cams. They are "high lift short duration" grinds that make killer low to mid range pr and trq. they said they have no prokuction grinds for AMC yet but to use grind #5442/270h-4hy110+4 to get the Xtreme cam specs. contact them for more info.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure that I need to get at least a new block. The owner said that the radiator blew and was replaced with a new thermostat to boot. A week later he was running down I95 and it started loosing power and making noises so he headed for the shoulder and just as he got to the shoulder it died. No coolant left in the cooling system. The battery is shot so I haven't tried to turn it over yet but he tells me that he tried to start it and the starter motor just squealed. Thanks again.

First off going to a t400 would be a problem unless you change the frt axle as you would have the wrong side drop. If you want OD then you could get a complete set up from a later model (88 up) Chevy using engine tranny and t/case. You would need to get the complete engine/tranny/ecm wiring harness to go with it. I think Painless may also sell one but they are not cheap. You would also need to be good with electrical systems to do it. I think the wiring would be fun, but, some people think I am sick because I enjoy doing automotive electrical work.
