I have a 74 Cherokee whth a TH 400 that whines when first started in the morning. I'll drive it for a few minutes and it will stop the whine and for the rest of the day it will be fine. Depending on how cold it is outside is how long the noise will last. Really cold I can count on it lasting a few miles. Warm morning, less than a mile. It sounds like I have a supercharger mounted to the engine, meaning, the higher the RPMs the higher piched the sound. I had it rebuilt about two years ago and the sound started then. The mech said it was a bushing just being broken in. Two years later that poor bushing is still tight. Was he correct or is there something else going on. Fluids are ok. After a few minutes of this noise its fine for the rest of the day. No noise unless its sits in the cold for a few hours. Warm summer days it will make the noise for a few minutes then I can leave it parked for the whole day and come back and it won't make a sound. Cold Winter days are another story. Anybody had anything close to this? Any help would be great! Just don't tell me its going to cost a lot of money to fix. Happy holidays, 74Cherok
P.S. How do you know when the Qudra-Trac Chain is about to blow?

Under the QT in the middle is an inspection plug. After you drain the unit http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif you can stick a screw driver in there and measure the chain deflection. Factory allowable spec is 1/2". They'll go a little more than that and be ok depending on how hard you use it but if it's way more put a new chain on your Christmas list.

First things first: find your receipt for the rebuild and have the shop take a look at the tranny again. Have them replace the fluid and filter and listen for the whine. My '78 Chero was doing the same thing, but I added some tranny fluid and the noise went away. It had been diagnosed as either low fluid or either the front fluid pump or the torque converter going bad (by other members on this list). Hopefully, the fluid change will help. However, if the shop re-used your old torque converter it may be going out. Hope this helps!

OOH sory to bring the bad news but the noise on mine was a bad Torque converter bearing and tranny pump. The bearing was galling on the shaft on the trans pump that the T converter rests on. When they worked on the tranny did they replace the torque converter? They should have. What happened on mine is that the bearing was still in place even though it was going bad. but when I removed the TC to replace a brocken flex plate it fell out of place and was just bouncing around inside the torque converter but i didnt realize it. Change the fluid and see it there are shiny metal dust in the fluid.
Mine sounded like it was supercharged or as my son called it the Jetsons car.
Take it back to the shop and tell em to fix it or you will show up with AL Gore's team of lawyers to demand three re manual reinstalls.
