My 84 GW has 175k on it and its time to shop around for a new engine for my dream machine. I found a 401 (rebuilt to specs) for $1800 and found a builder (although the guy selling it swears it ran great) for $500. I would love to build my own but unfortunatley live in an apt and have no where to build it at. Does rebuilt price sound fair, how much more for a high performance cam and how much more gas should I expect the 401 to use than the 360 I have now? Would I be better off just souping up my 360?

here in iowa you can get just about any AMC motor for about 100 bucks at my fav. junk yard. so to me that seems a bit high. but also we are dumb hicks here who know nothing. The gas deal...my 401 is bored 30 over and everything with the exception of headers and an accell coil plugs and wires is stock. that suckers get ten miles to the gallon, now my old tired 116k 360 gets like 4 with a good wind behind it, and my rebuilt 360 gets about ten aswell. so in my opinion the benefits of the 401 lead me to use it in my mud unit. so really i think gas mileage is about equal.
