I had mine primered for over a year. I just had to clean the surface rust off every now and then and reprime. It all depends on how thick you get the primer too. If it is only a couple of months and you keep it as dry as you can, I am sure it will be all right.

depends on what kind of primer you're talking about. laquer based (spray can) will not hold up. for bare metal use a red/brown or self etching primer. to make it last you need to use a sealing coat on top of that - this depends on the type of hi build primer you buy. what you are looking for is a two part primer that is chemically changed into a sealer when reducer is added, of course you will need a spray gun, a mixing stick, tack rags, and silicone wax/grease remover to do the job right check with a local paint supply store and explain to them what you're trying to do they should point you in the right direction

If you use a high quality primer/sealer such as ppg's dp line, it seals the surface and will prevent rust indefinately. I used some on a chevelle last summer and have seen no rust whatsoever.

If you are going to go through a lot of trouble to clean the metal, you might want to get some inexpensive top coat to cover it with for now, even if it's not your final color.

I sand blasted alot of rust on my wag last summer and will have to do it all again next summer cause I never got around to top coating it.
