My 83 Wag will not stay in full time 4. I have 4 low and 2wd no problem. I suspected my vaccum motor but I just finished some testing and that does not seem to be the case. I manually assisted the shift motor with a prybar and then locked it in place with wire, same result, as soon as load is applied nasty sound and no motion. Chain? I have not looked at it yet but since it functions in 4 low without any problems I had eliminated that as a cause. Unfortunatly the only spare drivetrain I have is a qt from a 77/78 which does not help much. Any suggestions?

!@!@####!!! :( :( I did suspect that this was the issue. Two more questions. 1)I read something in this forum once about welding the VC hub and basically converting it to a part time case but I cannot find it. Can anyone point me to that thread or explain the theory to me. 2)Will any internal parts from the 77 qt case work on the 83 229?

Welding the VC was talked about and I see no reason it would not work. However I have not heard if it has been done or not. There are no internal parts from the Q-Trac case that will work. Your options are weld the VC (not sure that is what I would do) Next is replace with a used or rebuilt case, or what I would do, convert it to a 208 case. ;)

Well if the welding is not a common or recommended fix I will have to go with the 208 conversion. I know it is the better way so I will have to track one down. Don't I have to replace front driveshaft as well to offset the longer housing on the 229? Thanks for your help.

The rear drive shaft is the only one you need to get from the donor.

Good thing I asked! Thanks again.

I was going to try the welding route but when I got into the case there was more wrong
with it then just the V/C. So I'm going with the 208 as well. If you do dig in to the 229
watch out for those needle bearings!
